Blog Entry 24 of 33 Life in the St. Vrain
News and commentary on educational issues, especially as they pertain to education in the St. Vrain Valley.

Halfway There
Contributed by: Brad Jolly   on 6/12/2008

For many years, I have tried to break through the cacophony of people screaming for more school funding by offering good ideas that could be implemented in either a cost-neutral or cost-saving fashion. People on the gimme side of the argument usually failed even to acknowledge the ideas, as they destroyed their argument that positive change could only come with more money.

Finally, in today's Times-Call, Sean Lynch, though arguing for a mill levy override and bond, has acknowledged that I have "some great ideas that could help our kids and schools." He continues, saying my "ideas would effect a great deal of change at the school district level."

Unfortunately, Mr. Lynch leaps to the unwarranted conclusion that my ideas require "additional funding." This is absolutely not true; most of the ideas are cost neutral, and in some cases they actually save the district and its employees money, time, or both.

I have e-mailed Mr. Lynch, inviting him to discuss this further. My guess is that he will take me up on the offer, as his letter reveals him to be a reasonable man who sincerely cares about education. I hope he does take me up on this, but do not look for the details of any such conversation in the blog. I have always treated such conversations as private matters, and I will continue to do so.
