An opening night art display of heartwarming and heartbreaking photos showed the forgotten causalities of Hurricane Katrina. The studio walls tell a story about dogs and cats left behind during the flood. The exhibit is a reminder of the animals displaced by the chaos of the storm. The number of animals still on the streets is somewhere between 5000 and 40,000. Who's feeding them?
Marsha Steckling and Jeanne Steckling are sisters who travelled to New Orleans in May 2007 and witnesses some of the precious dogs and cats left behind. They worked with
Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO), a volunteer organization that provides rescue, rehabilitation and adoption for lost and abandoned feral cats and dogs. ARNO is an all-volunteer grassroots organization where animals are fed, cared for and loved with the hope they will be adopted or reunited with their owners. Volunteers crews travel to certain sites and leave food and water for the animals left on the streets. Some photos by Marsha and Jeanne show cats who converged on some food left for them. ARNO is hungry for volunteers that visit the city to come and take a look, take some dogs for a walk, help with food drops and other relief.
The photography exhibit is currently displayed at French Quarter Photography on Main and 4 th (just west of Ziggie's). The images of dogs and cats offer some insight into the plight they continue to face. The exhibit will continue for the next four weeks.
