Blog Entry 5 of 208 The Subversive Liberal
"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

What's eating Percy?
Contributed by: Bing Van Gorden   on 4/7/2007

Recent letter to the editor writer Percy Connaroe (Apr.7.The Same Man?) was quite a rant. Percy has a beef with Ken Salazar's falling "into lock step with the radical left."

Then goes on to say "Machine politics, an infamous Democratic Party trademark, has returned, With George Soros and MoveOn.org in charge, there is no room for moderates (as Sen. Joe Lieberman also discovered)"

Ken Salazar has made several votes and endorsements that have had many a lefty scratching their heads. He endorsed Alberto Gonzalez for Attorney General and voted yes on the Military Commissions Act of 2006 among them.

In the same paper an article pointed out Salazar's opposition to cutting off funding to the war completely despite Senator Majority leader Harry Reid's vow to do so if needed. Percy is barking up the wrong liberal's pant leg. And what views require to be a "radical lberal?" Wanting an end to this war quickly? Wanting our troops home safely? Believing we've made mistakes we need to fix right now?

Those seemed to be the opinions of most Americans according to poll after poll. MoveOn.Org doesn't have that many members. And what is this fascination that the evil George Soros is bank rolling the Democratic Party? Is he using his powerful mind control methods? I haven't received a dime from the guy, nor have I paid much attention to the MoveOn emails I still get.

Percy further laments the recent appropriations bill passed by the Congress as a "punish Bush project." That's rich. They offered a billion more than he asked for! Yes there is a non binding portion that requires troop reduction within the next year and a half. Bush can't get our troops out by then? I think that line of thinking is what is hurting troop morale. Percy bemoans the pork. Pork that includes aid to New Orleans, our vets and Walter Reed.

Percy wraps up this terribly confused and befuddled rant by insisting that "Democrats insist on turning Iraq into a genocidal blood bath." Actually that what it is right now. Over 650,000 Iraqi civilians are dead. Sectarian violence is happening now and our presence isn't helping the situation.

Yeah Chris I agree. The timing was very tasty. Percy must have been peeved to see that Salazar article! It certainly didn't help his argument.

Bing buddy, as a fellow recurring character in the Times-Call OpenForum section, you know it takes them a while to run a letter. Like you I saw the irony in running this letter and that story within pages of each other. Sometimes I don't think it's a coincidence. I do wish they'd run these letters on their website.
