Blog Entry 76 of 208 The Subversive Liberal
"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

Is dog fighting a black thing?
Contributed by: Bing Van Gorden   on 8/24/2007

I know I might take heat for this but I have to pose the question. Is dog fighting a "black" thing? I say this because the NAACP seems to think that Michael Vick is being "lynched." Their word, not mine. Call me crazy but I find that analogy demeans the seriousness of lynching. Local progressive host Jay Marvin on AM760 has been talking about this for about a week and it seems that every black caller is making Vick's dog fighting and gambling a racial issue. One caller this week kept shouting that there were no dogs in heaven. Huh?!? Then it's ok to watch them fight to the death?

R.L. White an Atlanta minister keeps saying that the media is acting as if Vick killed a person. Wait a second. I don't care what color you are, you kill dogs and consider dog fighting a sport you are a very twisted individual. Why would the NAACP dismiss the seriousness of such cruelty and indifference to life? I haven't heard anybody calling for Michael Vick to be lynched, even the most ardent animal rights advocate hasn't gone that far. The guy plead guilty, he should go to jail. This does not help the NAACPs cause at all.

And due to the nature of his position as an NFL player and representative he should be banned from the league unless he radically redeems himself. We are a nation of second chances. If Vick began a serious campaign to turn this thing around, I'm sure he could win people over. So far he hasn't expressed anything close to remorse and people defending him by belittling the charges against him are not helping. If you're neighbor had a dozen dogs buried on their property and dogs were killed by strangulation, electrocution and throwing them to the ground repeatedly, would you want him to come around anymore?

I just can't square with the kind of logic that dog fighting is no big deal, as NBA star Stephen Marbury implied recently. It seems to me that Vick's defenders are ignoring his sins, focusing on his skin color, and the skin color of the millions of outraged and sickened individuals. This really demeans the NAACP. This is worse than some of the hijinks that Sharpton and Jackson have used to make race an issue when it is not. And as a result minimizing the serious issues they do raise on occasion. I don't know what's worse. Incredible cruelty to animals or defending it. Either way it's sick. Vick made his bed. He chose to act this way, to break laws and showed cruel indifference towards animals.

Imagine your family pooch. Imagine that pooch goes missing. Imagine your beloved pet was stolen and used as fresh meat to train some of these fighting dogs. Imagine your pet being mauled to death. Despite its attempts to survive it is ultimately overpowered and ripped apart. Or it is left barely alive then strangled or drowned or electrocuted by human hands. Now defend Michael Vick, please. Defend this "sport." Tell me that these are just dogs, and bread for the purpose of fighting to justify this barbaric and inhumane act. It's the year 2007 and we are actually having this debate. It's tragic really. And disgusting.

One of my dogs is black. He barks a lot. Still, I don't think I want to see him get chewed up.

espn showed dog fighting clips, it was disgusting. This guy fought dogs for pleasure, he didn't do it for money. He enjoyed it. He is a disgusting human being.

Oops! Sorry. I thought you said ACLU. My brain is melted. Removing anything I said about the ACLU, if it's illegal, it's illegal. Period.

Thanks all, Jamie, I searched the web over and couldn't find any action by the ACLU on Vick's behalf. I did find many right wing sites attacking liberals and insinuating that we somehow support Vick and many of them mentioned the ACLU. Perhaps you could show me something I haven't heard. The NAACP is a different organization though was founde by the same folks way back when. Doug, I grew up in the Southern Tier of NY and saw some similar things so I know what your talking about.

I don't think so - when I was growing up in PA it was a huge big deal thing for poor whites. Along with cockfighting and much, much worse. Low IQ = "Let's torture animals" The scary part is, what (and who!) they consider 'animals'. BE AFRAID.

I agree with the ACLU in certain circumstances, but this isn't one of them. If dogfighting is illegal, it's illegal, and it doesn't matter what race, sex, sexual orientation or what kind of oatmeal the criminal is/eats.

Right on! However, there is no debate. Vick's defenders are sad individuals. The case has nothing to do with race, it's about right vs. wrong. What Vick plead guilty to is wrong. Defending what he did is wrong. No debate.
