Blog Entry 29 of 66 Wrongmont
These are the Longmont stories you may have missed in the local paper, if they ran them at all. I will expand on what was either glossed over or totally ignored - but still may be of interest to you. I encourage citizens to be aware of their local, state, and federal government and to speak up and hold their representatives accountable for their actions - good, bad, or otherwise.

Backstabbing or Bandwagoning, Pt 3
Contributed by: Chris Rodriguez   on 9/12/2007

As I've written before, freedom of speech is a great thing. I would never be for silencing someone I disagree with as sooner or later if you give them enough rope, well you can figure out the rest.

So it goes with General Petraeus's report to Capitol Hill, and the House and Senate committees questioning of it, him, and Iraq Ambassador Crocker. But let's get to the reaction, some of it before General Petraeus even made his appearance at the hearings.

If there was any doubt of the anti-military leanings of the hard left, going all the way back to Vietnam days, it was erased with Moveon.Orgs " General Betray Us" ad. That moniker was so predictable, what teenager dreamed that one up for them? There's so much that can be said about this group and their tinfoil-hat wearing followers, but I'll just leave it up to the reader to Google them, Petraeus, "Betray Us", or pick a left or right leaning blog, a news site, or the several commentaries and decide for yourself. There's plenty to find out there.

Once you decide which side you agree with, it's important to find out how your elected leaders feel about it. Will they embrace this slander or will they distance themselves from it? Will they take contributions (some already have) from them, or will they deny them? Does this group, others like them, and their followers define your party? After all, they've said " Now it's our party: we bought it, we own it, and we're going to take it back." ( that party would be the Democratic Party). Do they own you? I hope it was a good deal, and that it wasn't money from any Chinese fugitives.

If the Democrats lose any seats or the presidential election in '08, they can thank this group. Far be it for me to give them any advice, but they'd be best served as treating these people like the nutty relative you keep hidden away somewhere. Why should I care? Well, unlike some of our more generalizing simpletons, I know most Democrats are not on the fringe like these people. Most people, regardless of party, want to go to work, take care of their families, and be left alone. They'll take the abuse their president receives to a point, but to a lesser point when it comes to the military. You attack one of their main leaders, you are attacking the troops.

Most Americans aren't fruitloops on the extreme left or right. Most of these people ignore or dismiss extremist groups like Neonazis, Aryan Nation, the Klan, and the new kid on the block, MoveOn. Too much of a stretch? When you Google them, you'll see commentators bring up the Stalinist and McCarthy'ite similarities of how they operate. Still think we can't question the hard left's support of the troops? Well, as one blogger wrote " A general who "betrays us" is a traitor, like Benedict Arnold. Now that it's OK to question people's patriotism, can we start with MoveOn?"

So please, keep talking. Don't censor or shut them up. If you want to alienate large sections of your party and drive a wedge, be my guest. Just don't come crying after Election Day wondering " how did we lose"? (Quickly followed by " it must've been rigged"). I'll end with one of my favorite Phil Hendrie quotes: " Every time you open your mouth you sink into a bigger swamp of dumb".

I too get puzzled by the intemperate talk going on in the public eye.

I will make the additions to my ever-growing list! However, I can not, in good concience, add jazz. I know it's a fun poke, but "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis is easily among the ten best albums of all time! Just take it from me! Would I lie to you? (Rhetorical question, man)

Hey Bill, nice to meetcha, thanks for the rating. I know you're joking, but got me to thinking. Been in plenty of groups (mostly bands), yet always end up going my own way (that a song?)and being better for it. Then knew I couldn't kiss the butt required to go very far in that bidness, which is why I could probably never be a politician either. Add "posers and sellouts" to your list of "All That Is Bad". Oh, and jazz. (a joke for Bing)

Hey, did anyone notice that Bing apologized? Who's posting under his name? Really, you got it right on Chris! How 'bout we start our own fringe, crazy group and call it "RightOn!"? Of course, we'd need an angry, manipulating, demented billionaire to finance it, but they're all already giving to MoveOn and the Dems!

It was a rhetorical question, matters more how it's used and by who than who invented it. One of the bigger surprises was Susan Estridge, but I get the feeling what you and I consider the "left" may be different. For simplicity's sake, let's say left=Dem (yes I know there are conservative Dems), and even some of the Senators who voted against that resolution said they didn't like what MoveOn said, but voted against the idea of a public condemnation for it. But alot of Dems voted for it, too.

You asked who came up with "Betray Us?" http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article2284289.ece?Submitted=true His superiors and troops that served under neath him as this article illustrates. It's from August, long before the MoveOn ad.

How are they on the wrong side of the issue? Every poll shows otherwise. Bush's speech and Patreeaus testimony fooled no one. MoveOn put out another ad mocking Rudy Guilliani. I don't know who on the left has condmened it but regardless the public perception regarding the ad is much ado about nothing by the Republicans who are wasting time in the halls of Congress by trying to shut up an advocacy group. Who's talking about it beside right wing pundits because I haven't heard it. Like it or not that ad is very much a representation of the majority of Americans who are tired of being lied to.

Thanks for the amended rating and comments. The pic alone was worth a couple stars. I'm more interested in the effect these kinds of things have than the motive. It's still being talked about alot and I've been surprised by some of the people on the left who've come out against it. The ones that wait too long then eventually do, they might not be judged so nicely. It's a public perception thing, whether it's right or wrong or you agree with it or not, and MoveOn's on the wrong side of that right now. How they handle it will determine they're future relevance.

Now I can see how some might be turned off by the pun but frankly I found it refreshing. The man contradicts the GAO and former generals including his boss Admiral Fallon. He has gone on a PR tour for the Bush administration. And it obviously benefits him to continue to do so. He was not sworn in for a reason. And he went to FoxNews for another puff piece. Anybody can show you cartoons of "mobile weapons labs" it doesn't mean you should believe them. As Powell demonstrated before the UN.

When I first heard it I wasn't impressed by the statement and it sounded over the top. However, they have less influence than corporations and elections and many Democratic representatives avoid them like the plague. Terrified to be marginalized as being a "liberal." This is akin to the NRA stating they own the Republican Party. Yeah, but not really. MoveOn gives a voice to a large chunk of the electorate, even if they approach rudeness or discourtesy. One can call a group fringe and far left with a sneer but get all uppity when a liberal is impolite and calls a liar a liar and a traitor a traitor.
