Blog Entry 50 of 82 Baseball, football, the Grateful Dead,Jesus and me
Could be politics, religion, music, sports, family life or anything in-between and outside the lines. (I refuse to say "outside the box," even if my chosen line means exactly the same thing) Chronologically, I'm 40. The consensus among those who know me best puts me somewhere between 10 and 13 in terms of maturity. I love listening to Jimmy Buffett, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and all acts Country (except the Dixie Chicks who offended my long-held,closed-minded view of decent behavior) I have deep, strong beliefs in all things I believe in and sometimes in things I don't. I pride myself in my contradictory nature even though it is a sign of weakness to change one's mind. I have been known to waver more than John Kerry talking about national defense, though I remain steadfast in my beliefs. I am prepared to argue to the death on one issue and one issue alone; Dickey Betts should be allowed back in the Allman Brothers. On this, there is no compromise. I believe in compromise in all other areas so long as the compromise includes everything that I want or believe in. In all seriousness, I am a lucky man, blessed with a wonderful family and an uncanny ability to not care about anything if the situation requires such. I believe that minds are like parachutes in that they have been known to fail their user, albeit with a slightly lower fatality rate. So that's me, or at least that's kind of me. I mean, I felt that way right before I didn't.

Why Don't You Enlist?
Contributed by: Bill Prather   on 11/4/2007

The sixties band, Buffalo Springfield said it best,
"Singin' songs and carrying signs.
Mostly say, hooray for our signs."

Recently, some misguided individuals staked a claim in Arvada to spout their hatred toward unsuspecting motorists. I happened by and saw one sign that read, "Why Don't You Enlist?"

Unfortunately, I was in uniform and therefore I couldn't give the sillies a piece of my mind. Soldiers are far too mature and professional to be seen carrying signs or arguing with misinformed, silly people. We prefer to carry the hopes of our country and to "argue" with those who wish to kill innocent Americans.

When I saw the silly signs, I wanted to stop, get out of my car and ask the sign-holder to explain what he meant. I was on my way to work at a military installation, in my military uniform, and this person was holding a sign asking the reader (me) "Why Don't You Enlist?"

Guess, what? I DID! I enlisted because I believe in the rights of all Americans. I will defend my country and all who live here. Even the ignorant fools who dare to ask me, "Why Don't You Enlist?"

Here's my question for the silly, sign holders:

"I enlisted because I wanted to defend you. Why do you mock me?"

You better stop, children. What's that sound? Everybody look what's going down.

When I say that I am against this war, it does not mean I am against the soldiers who must fight it. I actually worry a great deal about the mental health of the brave men (and women) who will be lucky enough to return to this country alive, only to suffer from horrible images of what they witnessed (and may have been ordered to do). But that is probably just the Mom in me. :-) p.s. I commend you on your restraint.

Hard to say what they meant. Kudos for you not stopping, though a part of me wishes you had.......

I concur with Karin, I believe that sign was directed at the mindless cheerleaders for more war who have nothing to lose. I doubt the intent was to mock those who actually do enlist. Try to keep in mind these sign holders are protesting on your behalf.

While signs are often inscrutable, I read this one as suggesting people who talk the talk should walk the walk, not mockery of people like you who chose to do so. However, I also think it is hypocritical for most humans to dwell on hypocrisy.
