Blog Entry 163 of 174 The Subversive Liberal
"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

Quick thought about Doug Bruce
Contributed by: Bing Van Gorden   on 4/26/2008

Doug Bruce calls illegal immigrants "illiterate peasants" and can't seem to comprehend what the hub bub is about. Maybe I can make him understand.

He insists it's an accurate term and perhaps it is. It's also offensive. If I were to turn the tables on Mr. Bruce and was a state representative on the floor, perhaps I could refer to my colleague as a big fat white bigot. It's as accurate as any other description.

But I wouldn't because it would be very rude to do so. I think illustrated why statements that may well be accurate shouldn't be said as it is destructive. If you still don't get it, try calling an overweight co-worker fat. See how far that gets you the next time you need something from them.

There's a knee jerk reaction to anything perceived as being PC or politically correct speech. Bruce offers an example why people try to be PC. It is to less likely offend. Of course it can get down right silly at times. But at least it's polite and civil.

What results did Mr. Bruce get from his inflammatory but technically accurate remark? He has a couple of like minded yahoos worked up about the fall out that call in tot he paper anonymously and he's offended most of the state and of course any illegal immigrants. He's no closer to solving the problem of illegal immigration, if anything he has made it worse.

Of course he has the right to say whatever despicable thing he wants. Free speech is messy after all, and I'll be writing a little more about that later. But civility matters too. No one suggest Bruce be locked up. At least not for these comments anyway. But we all have an obligation as holders of free speech to use ours and condemn comments like this.

The only way to halt illegal immigration is to demand that the Mexican government take care of it's citizens instead of encouraging them to illegally emigrate to the United States. We need government subsidies to farmers so they can pay good wages to Americans so they won't need illegal immigrants. We need to ensure any trade with Mexico includes rights for workers, here and there. And of course go after the employers instead of coddling them. But speech like Bruce's doesn't do any of that.

The only way to halt the 12 to 30 million illegal immigrants staying perpetually in this nation. Is for the federal government to go after the real culprits, the predator employers. Our only option is the Federal SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) It is not perfect, but best we can enact, before the next president moves into the Oval office and dumpa an full AMNESTY in the taxpayers lap.

This is what passes for 'leadership' at the far right. Basically, all disputes can be settled by name-calling and fistfights. Essentially, it's a high-school bully's mentality. We CAN do better and we WILL. The one thing people like Bruce do is stir people up; which CAN lead to good things. (but likely not for HIM)
