Blog Entry 167 of 179 The Subversive Liberal
"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

DNC v McCain
Contributed by: Bing Van Gorden   on 5/3/2008

I like what I see from the way the new DNC ad featuring John McCain.

http://www.democrats.org/a/2008/04/dnc_ad_on_mccai.php

Direct and to the point. It features Mc Cain being told that "President Bush has talked about our staying in Iraq for 50 years." To which he responds, "maybe a hundred." The ad then shows footage of Iraq, in it's brutal and current reality. Critics claim that the ad implies Mc Cain is being taken out of context. He has been clear that he meant as long as there was no loss of American life. One would have to make the leap on their own on whether or not the implication in the ad is McCain wants a combat role for 100 years. He seems to think it does. But that is beside the point.

Just how does he plan on stopping the current hostilities to allow that to happen, and does he mean we'll stay there for 100 years if hostilities never cease? Is a presence in Iraq like the ones he suggests in foreign countries such as Japan and Germany possible without creating more tension within the Arab world where there is already such hostility towards us? And lastly, why should we?

In quite an Orwellian move the Republican National Committee is threatening to sue the DNC for this ad. The thing is, there's nothing inaccurate about it and it's Mc Cain's own words. The DNC's response to this threat? "Stop whining." It's about time they grew a spine.

Thanks all. Gail, I think I addressed your assertion that the DNC left out critical parts. No they didn't. They used McCain's own words, there was no inference that McCain was saying the war could go on that long.

Let me clarify one thing: a potted plant would be better than McCain. I -will- say that Obama shows the most statesman like qualities I've seen from either party in decades.

Mick, don't be discouraged. You need to hear McCain's entire statement. The DNC left out critical parts which completely distort it.

I wondered a bit about McCain's comment, too. I mean, the primary problem the Arab world seems to have with us in Iraq is the thought of long-term occupation (or call it what you will). And then John comes out and says he can see it happening. Jeesh.

Amen to that Ralph. Part of the cure, I think, would be for the DNC to stop kowtowing to the corporate fundraisers. Yeah, THAT'LL HAPPEN.

It would be nice to see democrats grow a fully functional spine, wouldn't it? But I wouldn't bet the farm on it.
