Blog Entry 168 of 168 The Subversive Liberal

"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

Nothing makes you feel sadder for humanity than opening up the paper to read another letter to the editor from Benjamin C. Harper Jr. The title, "Criticism is not always an insult" leads right into his first insult referring to liberal sheep. He follows up with another by claiming we never challenge his political statements because we can't defend our "liberal prattle." He defines ignorance as being unaware or ill informed and then exhibits his own by using the term "Democrat Party." There is no such thing. It's always been the Democratic Party just like it was phrased by Thomas Jefferson. The petty nature of this slur is reminiscent of a childish school yard taunt. In Harper's view it's a matter of historical fact that the average Democrats "do not possess the intelligence to make sound judgments." His examples include he "farce of global warming" and "twisting the truth on virtually every issue, including Iraq." This is an unsubstantiated claim of course. Just what about global warming, and the thousands of climate scientists who agree it exists, is farcical? Just what truth is being twisted about Iraq? Harper doesn't use facts to counter facts. He merely parrots the same talking points he hears on the Rush Limbaugh show or on FoxNews. I'd gladly talk specifics with him any day of the week, and have offered factual rebuttals in the past to his sophomoric rants. But I suspect that Harper simply ignores facts that conflict with his world view. He is convinced he knows, what he obviously doesn't, and that frankly is very sad and pathetic. It's a shame that some on our community are so ill informed and hard headed they feel they have to demean entire segments of society in a juvenile fashion. It makes me wonder why he and others like him, hate half of America so much.

People can't look away from a crash scene, face it. The media will keep them viable much, much longer than reasonable, simply because of the old fishwrap-ism: "If it bleeds, it leads" - and, OH... how the right is bleeding... money... supporters... credibility... worse by the day.

Modern movement conservatism is based entirely on fear, hatred and ignorance. They're increasingly bunkered in members-only media and churches - sometimes quite big churches - where they repeat their political chatecisms to each other and shout down any dissent. They keep their eyes tightly closed and pray for reality to go away. Their unwillingness to acknowledge change - let alone cope with it - makes them unfit to survive as a movement, and it won't be too long before they're about as numerous and relevant as Rosecrutians. It's a shame how much damage they're doing on their way out, though.

What's more revealing, in my opinion, is that a newspaper would print such ignorant bile. Yet another reason I gave up 'fishwrap' a long time ago. What isn't lies is flat-out crazy.
