Blog Entry 169 of 192 The Subversive Liberal
"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

Creationism v. Evolution
Contributed by: Bing Van Gorden   on 5/29/2008

Creationism is not science. It's a deeply flawed argument that concludes that the universe is so complicated, an intelligent designer must exist. This is not proof or scientific theory. This is a leap of faith, which makes it religion. Their arguments are dishonest. Using phrases like darwinists and evolutionists as if scientific theory also required a leap of faith. They demand scientists explain everything with certainty. When they can't the creationist conveniently fills in the gap with God. And because science can't provide the answers it is further proof that God exists.

Science doesn't work that way. Evolution, like any other field of science, is a theory based on observation and experimentation. It requires an open mind to possibilities not yet discovered or considered. Creationism is not compatible with that. All observations are molded to fit into a preconceived notion that requires no evidence. There is no room for experimentation because the premise can not be proved and must simply be believed. Just because science can't explain everything, or our minds can't fully comprehend everything doesn't mean God exists, let alone created everything.

I'm comfortable in knowing, mankind will probably never know the secrets of the universe. Science isn't supposed to be an answer to all of life's mysteries. But at least it explores them in a rational way. In a way we might better understand. It's a harder row to hoe than faith in an intelligent designer. Many could safely argue science is merely man's attempt at understanding God. That evolutionary theory is one way to grasp with our minds how God works. The creationist is not satisfied with that however. Reason conflicts with faith. If you think long enough you might not need to believe in God to explain the unexplainable.

I can swallow micro-evolution, but the big picture of evolution takes more faith than I can muster. I'll stick with believing in being created by a higher power.

Bingster, You wrote this on my 50th Birthday! Perfect! I was created (you'll have to ask my parents exactly how, though I have a clue) now I am evolving. Or is that just getting older? lol Seriously, I never saw the conflict with Evolution and God, but then, one man's logic is another man's heresay, right? Good writing, my man.

Ken Poppe used to be a Longmont public school teacher, but no longer is: http://www.timescall.com/wherenow/wherenow-story.asp?ID=5377 His success in teaching his students global warming denialism made our town nationally famous, and not in a good way: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2007/03/another_bad_teacher.php - He's now a footsoldier in the Christian right's war against reason. It may come as a suprise to no one that his book "Reclaiming Science from Darwinism" is listed as a "Faith Journey Resource" on the Lifebridge website: http://www.lbcc.org/templates/System/details.asp?id=22545&PID=402762&Style=

Bing, so glad to see you address the issue of evolution and creationism. The Longmont Times-Call repeatedly prints LTEs from someone named Kenneth Poppe, a self-appointed authority in the region who's made it his life's mission to debunk any science that competes with his religious views. His claim for standing is that he's a science teacher. I'm so glad that I don't have children who are students at the school where he teaches. If I did, I would leave no stone unturned to prevent them from being taught science by someone obviously incompetent in the sciences. It boggles the mind why his school maintains him on staff. Perhaps he's teaching at a religious school. He certainly has no business teaching in a public school and proselityzing about intelligent design aka creationism.
