Blog Entry 177 of 204 The Subversive Liberal
"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

Email to City Council Member Sean McCoy

Mr. McCoy,

I have to say I'm disappointed at recent events and I believe you owe Mr and Mrs. Chris Rodriguez an apology. Your conduct was unbecoming of a council member. Whatever personal feelings you may harbor should remain just that when in public. I was not impressed by your response to Mrs. Rodriguez for the record either. I took exception that you found it necessary to label Chris' web site as being conservative. The label is irrelevant and inaccurate. And it was in no way an excuse for your behavior.

I don't always agree with Mr. Rodriguez, and we've yet to share a pint at a local brewery. But if you bothered to do a little research you'd find he and his wife have sacrificed their own time to encourage others to participate in voting. Anyone handing out copies of the Constitution deserves an award from the city, not a rude knee jerk reaction from a city councilman. If you had suspicions of partisanship you could have simply looked. And if you found them, you could have politely disagreed and moved on.

When the shift in the balance of the council went to the left I was very pleased, being a lefty myself and having grown tired of the developer first mentality it previously had. Please understand my concern; as you are perceived, so is your political philosophy. I must hold you and the other members of the council who share my views politically to a higher standard. We need civil discourse in a very major way and we need that from you and the other members of the council if we expect it in the community at large.

Bing, if taken to heart by said Councilman your message could go a long ways towards the healing long over due in this community from the open wounds of the November election campaign. Let’s hope for the community’s sake the Councilman gets it. Your stand on ethics took courage; I join messes Rodriquez and Levinson in being appreciative and proud of your ethical stand demanding equal protection of the rights by City Council members of all constituents regardless of their beliefs. As a recovering social progressive myself, you reinforce my faith that it is still possible in this fair community for citizens to agree to disagree on politics without being disagreeable. That’s what Americanism is about.

Very nice, Bing. I know you are not about to join me in a lovefest for Mike Rosen and Rush Limbaugh, but I am proud of your stance on ethics in this case nonetheless.
