Blog Entry 178 of 192 The Subversive Liberal
"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

Jim Stick blames Liberals?
Contributed by: Bing Van Gorden   on 7/20/2008

Jim Stick needs to check some facts before going after liberals for impeding free speech. Mr. Stick gives examples of disruptions of speaking events of the likes of Ann Coulter, a woman who has unimpeded air time on TV and Radio to say the most despicable and slanderous things regarding anyone that dare use their free speech rights to say something she doesn't like. I would consider it my civic duty to heckle her at any speaking engagement.

With recent comments by radio hosts such as Rush Limbaugh, calling for riots in Denver; Michael Savage dismissing autism as simply bratty behavior and Michael Reagan recently joking about killing Muslim babies, and their mothers on the public airwaves, I would hope someone would stand up and say something to these hateful jackals.

Want an example? Listen to left and right sides on talk radio. The left shows allow opposing view points from callers and guests. The same can't be said for the right. Calls are heavily screened and when a dissenter manages to sneak in they are yelled at and cut off. These people are too cowardly to engage in honest debate. It may be rude, but I have a right to stand up to bullys with microphones who enjoy their free speech a little more than others.

Mr. Stick gets wrong recent events at an Obama rally, where two Muslim women were asked to move from behind Mr. Obama. The ACLU and other liberals were vocally against it, despite Mr. Stick's assertion. He 's also wrong about The Fairness Doctrine as a liberal attempt to stifle free speech. There has been no legislative effort or serious discussion of bringing it back. Liberal talk show hosts have been vocally against it as well. Regardless it shows a profound ignorance of what the doctrine would do. It doesn't stifle speech, it requires equal time for political opinion. Someone would actually have the opportunity to refute what Sean Hannity just lied about. And conservatives just can't have that.

Jim Stick said in a recent Times-Call letter to the editor, "In June, Obama's campaign had two Muslim women removed from seating right behind him in Detroit--bad TV image." This wouldn't have been necessary but for the unequivocal, intentional lies coming from the rabid portion of the rightwing, i.e. that Barack Obama is a Muslim. It's disappointing that Obama's campaign had to take this action because too many in our nation are not ready or willing to accept the Muslims amongst us. Muslims are not homogeneous any more than are Christians, Jews, or other religions and ethnicities But that's an inconvenient reality to some. The current American regime and its backers have demonstrated for the last seven years just how powerful a weapon fear can be. I can only hope that most of those exploited by the fear tactics have come to realize just how badly they've been played.

Kevin, I addressed many of your issues in my post already, including the Fairness Doctrine. It appears your listening to the wrong shows and don't get what I was referring to. If there is a specific point I made you wish to refute, please do so. But please can the assumptions and stick to the facts. Left radio allows and encourages different POvs, right radio does not. They engage in slanderous name calling and falsehoods regarding liberal positions. There is no left equivalent to the likes of Coulter or Savage. I force myself to listen to these idiots so I have a well roundd opinion. I am a liberal after all.

You're listening to the wrong shows. Try Dennis Prager. Very civil, even sensitive. I hear it differently. I hear whining from liberals when conservative points are hard edged and telling. I hear empathy based, yet unintelligent and impractical reactions to issues on liberal talk, practical and pragmatic solutions on conservative talk. I look at it left and right brained. Left is conservative, right is liberal. Listen to both. Get whole in your views and make some progress. Coulter is hard to take because she is uncompromising and contemptuous of "girly men". Hannity is annoying. Rosen is arrogant. Ingraham is sarcastic. Levin is abusive. Savage is poisonous. But, they all have something to say. Are you one of those people who want the fairness doctrine because liberal talk doesn't compete well? Can't take the "hate"? C'mon. Tune out if you don't like something. Don't whine about it. It's called free speech. If you don't like what they are serving, change the station.

Conservatives are like herpes: we'll never be completely rid of them, but in six months they're going into serious remission.

I love Big Eddie Schultz as much as I dislike rate and runs. Sure, he has opinions but he listens to his callers even when they disagree.

OK, OK, not all conservatives are cowards. Some are really good people. I get a little worked up.
