Blog Entry 188 of 208 The Subversive Liberal
"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

The GOP doesn't give a rat's behind for you.

Rank and file Republicans who want to work hard and not have to pay attention to the minutiae and nuance of current events are being sold a line of BS from their party.

The Republican Party tells anyone listening, that they support the troops. Truth is, they don't. They support war profiteering, the privatization of our military and they despise veterans benefits. They won't give our troops a break from combat. They're using our National Guard and reserves to guard Iraq. They won't protect their jobs or their mortgages. They have supported policies that have placed our troops at greater risk. They lead us into a war based on false pretenses, with too few troops and not enough supplies. They not only shove them into the meat grinder, the Republicans expected our military to become ambassadors while being ordered to torture, kick down doors and basically terrorize neighborhoods. Democrats that stand up for the troops, and expose the misuse of our military, ironically are labeled as being against them. I don't blame the Republican on the street for being so ignorant of the facts. They're being lied to. I don't know how anyone in their right mind can justify the way the Republican party has treated our military.

Democrats have tried to fix a lot of the problems Republicans have caused. They've tried saving our active duty soldiers homes and jobs, and help pay their medical bills. Republicans filibustered, Bush threatened to veto. Dems had to fight Republicans like John Mc Cain and President Bush to get a new GI Bill of Rights. Republicans allowed the VA to go under funded until Democrats were able to break the deadlock and find the money. The saddest thing of all. The Republican Party has tossed billions of dollars to military contractors in no-bid, cost plus contracts while the Government Accountability Office was telling them the tax payers were getting ripped off. Republicans refused any inquiry. When these same contractors were accused of providing toxic water to our troops and electrocuting them in their showers, the Republican Party didn't want to hear it. When Democrats spoke up all the Republican leadership had to do was remind everyone how much Democrats hate the troops. They throw money at war profiteers and treat our troops and veterans as expendable. Pieces of meat. They do not honor their service.

Rank and file Republicans don't realize how much the Republican Party neglects labor and the middle class either. They bust unions and allow companies to renege on pensions and health care. The Republican Party is trying to drive down wages, create economic instability, they want the middle class to be small and easily controlled. They fight against the minimum wage. They fight against workers protections, the right to organize. It's no coincidence that wages have stagnated. The Republican Party gives welfare to corporations and fights against any for citizens. The Republican Party refuses to pay for infrastructure. They try to privatize everything. But some things, that benefit society as a whole, don't operate well when the motive is profit. The middle class needs cheap gas or a cheap way to get to work but the Republican Party doesn't care. They won't interfere with a companies profits on behalf of the people, they don't want to pay for people to get to work. They don't want to pay for your healthcare. They don't care if you lose your house if you get sick and can't afford your medical bills. Under the guise of personal accountability, the Republican Party believes every man or woman for themselves. Any attempt to help them, and you will promptly be labeled a socialist.

Democrats have been the party that understood that their has to be a balance between workers rights and business. They've understood a strong middle class is necessary for a strong economy. The Republican Party doesn't believe in compromise however. It's got to be all business, nothing for the middle class. Many of them claim the government has no right to interfere with a companies profits. This is nuts. I'm sorry but it's absolutely dumb to come to that conclusion. The Constitution doesn't protect profits, it protects individuals rights. And if needed protects those rights from corporations, charlatans and profiteers. When we took Baghdad the Republican administration thought they had a golden opportunity to show their stuff regarding the economy. They sent over planes full of football sized bundles of $100 bills to hand over to war profiteering contractors, they re-wrote the Iraqi Constitution to not allow labor unions, they thought they were going to rebuild the country leaving it entirely to the private sector. 5 years later, the citizens of Baghdad are still waiting for their electricity to come back on.

Joe Six-pack Republican isn't aware he has a safe workplace, his safe car, his decent wage, his vacation time, and health insurance to a Democrat who fought against Republicans who wanted nothing to do with these things. Now that we have many of the rights people fought and died for, we think we can stop protecting them. Can I remind people how polluted our streams were? How pollution literally fell from the sky? That stopped because Democrats fought Republicans to put curbs on industry that improved your quality of life. Little by little, the Republican Party is trying to undo everything Democrats fought for. A social safety net, a clean environment, safe working conditions, the list goes on. I can hear the party loyalists now, but the Democrats want to tax you to death!

No we don't. We want to invest in our future, take care of the poor, put people to work, keep them working and making a living wage so they can spend their money and save for retirement. We want to take care of our veterans and create them with greater caution and care. We want to repair our neglected infrastructure. We want to protect the American worker again. We want energy independence. We also happen to believe the environment and wildlife no matter how trivial to some, do matter and just might trump someone making a buck. We want our government to work for us not corporations.

I can not even imagine Cindy McCain shaking hands with a poor, homeless, black or Hispanic person let alone lending a tissue to a child who needes one. The Obamas have worked in the trenches, gotten down to help people and they don't own 7 houses. Wow, do all Republicans own 7 houses? Are they "bad republicans" if they don't? How do they keep them clean, remember to pay their help, and how on earth do they keep their insurance and taxes straight? Sure glad I don't have 7 houses to worry about and keep track of the financial obligation. I like sleeping at night. I am very happy with my gardens and roses and I don't have to hire anyone to clean my house. What a burden it is being rich!! Why would anyone want all that money? Unless, of course, you wanted to give some of it away to help others. Oh sorry, Republicans don't do that. What on earth was I thinking?
