Blog Entry 8 of 36 The Economic Illiterate
I hate politics. I didn't use to but somewhere between now and about 12 years ago politics has become a one-way street. It seems that anyone who is into politics knows only their street and it has become frustrating. I believe I can make the better argument (for the conservative side that is) with just the facts nearly every time. When it comes to mainstream discussion, I don't believe I've met my match. And it has gotten me all the way to nowhere and back again. But the free markets are a different story. It is a subject that one can study forever and never truly be an expert. To some degree we're all economically illiterate, some more than others. I would likely write mostly about the economic peril we face in this country. Of course if I see anything ridiculous posted by some leftie, I may find it difficult not to jump in even though I know it won't have any effect whatsoever.

Debunking the bunk
Contributed by: David Brown   on 9/6/2008

If someone would have told me a mere 5 years ago that the Republicans would nominate a woman for Vice-President and the Democrats and their surrogates on the Internet would mount an attack so severe, and proceed to smear her character simply because she is a Republican, there is no way I would have believed it. But here we are. The Republicans have nominated a woman for Vice-President and the far-left hate sites have mounted an attack on her character that never ceases to amaze. The lies are worthy of debunking and while it seems like a long row to hoe, the sooner you start, the sooner you can get to the end of it.

Troopergate:

The charge - Governor Palin abused her authority to have her ex-brother-in-law fired after a bitter divorce from the Governor's sister.

The truth - Mike Wooten, Alaska State Trooper had faced numerous disciplinary actions resulting from drinking in a patrol car, illegally shooting a moose - a crime - and making a death threat against a retired teacher. But the kicker was when he used his state-issued taser on his 10-year old stepson. The retired teacher was Mr. Heath, Gov. Palin's father. One might argue that episode as a domestic "he said-she said" dispute, giving the benefit of the doubt to Mr. Wooten. But anyone who uses a taser on a 10 year old boy with a state-issued weapon is clearly unfit to serve in a law enforcement position. Gov. Palin did the right thing in seeking his dismissal. She would be derelict if she didn't.

Governor Palin is under investigation for impeachment:

The charge: See Troopergate

The truth: See Troopergate. This has no legs. In fact, the investigating committee is going to wrap this up three weeks early.

Governor Palin is Anti-American:

The charge - Governor Palin was a member of the Alaska Independence Party, a political party that advocates seceding from the union.

The truth - The Alaskan Independence Party is hardly the "fringe party" some left-wing hate sites would have you believe and they don't advocate secession. Gov. Palin's husband was a member of the party in the past but Gov. Palin herself never was. You can read more about the AIP's stand on the issues here and notice none of the planks in their platform advocate secession. They sound like Libertarians to me.

Mayor Palin left the city of Wasilla bankrupt:

The charge: Mayor Palin pushed for and approved the Wasilla Sports center, leaving the town $20 Million in debt.

The truth: The actual sales cost was $14.7 Million. A food service wing was later added at a cost of $1.2 Million. To pay for the sports complex, the city council proposed , and voters approved a 0.5% sales tax increase and the entire cost is being paid off early. This charge is ridiculous. It is tantamount for blaming Wellington Webb for leaving the city of Denver "bankrupt" because of Invesco Field.

Governor Palin slashed funding for unwed teen mothers:

The charge: The Washington Post is charging that Governor Palin reduced funds for Covenant House by 20 percent, cutting funds from $5 Million to 3.9 Million. Covenant House Alaska is a multi-service agency that serves homeless and runaway youth, including teen mothers.

The truth: This is news to Deirdre Cronin, Executive Director of Covenant House. She issued a statement saying the operational budget for Convent House receives no more than 10 to 15 percent of its funds from state grants in any given year and is funded mostly by private donations. Ms. Cronin says her operating budget was not cut. It is true that the state legislature allocated $5 Million and Gov. Palin reduced that amount to $3.9 Million. However, $3.9 Million is an increase of over 300% from the 2007 allocation of nearly $1.3 Million and $1.2 Million in 2006, which the Washington Post conveniently forgets to mention. Can I get a "liberally biased media?" Can I at least get an "irresponsible reporting?" As of Friday, September 5th, The Washington Post has yet to issue a retraction. They must think increasing the state appropriation by 300% is a cut.

From the "Nip it in the bud" Department:

"Sarah Palin lied about putting the plane on eBay" should be a forthcoming charge from the left (You know how lefties are fond of their use of the word "lie," no matter how irresponsible they are in its context.)

No she didn't lie. Fulfilling a campaign promise, she really did put the plane on eBay. Unfortunately the only serious bid fell through. The plane was eventually sold to a businessman from Valdez but not through eBay. Look for the left to start squawking, "Palin lied - she didn't sell the plane through eBay!!" How long do you think it will be before that happens?

To be continued... (Unfortunately the left's willingness to make things up is only bounded by their imagination, which seems to know no bounds.)

Bing, you said, "Sarah Palin only lied about the plane on ebay if and only if one came away with the conclusion she implied she sold it on ebay." ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME??? So it's possible to be accused of lying if the idiot that's listening doesn't get it?? Good grief.

Niether one of us knows what will happen on Troopergate. But I'm willing to bet nothing happens - that it all blows over. Case of beer?

Joe Volger was a crackpot who did have secession in his platform. But parties change Bing. They are NOT, NOT, NOT for secession any longer. I'll give you an example. Since when have the Democrats been for tax cuts - something Obama is now claiming? I'll tell you when. Since they decided that tax cuts poll well. The Dems change what they're for every time there is a change in the polls. So parties change Bing. Give this one up Bing - you're argument is weak.

The voters approved the rink. I haven't read the Wasilla City Charter but I'm still willing to bet you have to have voter approval before you spend money.

She's not being "dishonest" about the bridge. She is spinning it. It's done all the time - look in the mirror.

I ADMITTED right up there, right up front the appropriation began as 5 mil and she reduced it to 3.9 mil. I'm glad you FINALLY, after a whole week, admitted this issue is no big deal and the final appropriation is a 300% INCREASE.

I wish she'd shut up about the bridge. It's obviously a losing argument but she keeps on - I don't understand it when people hang on to something that is easy to beat. Wait - it's what you do. Maybe you can explain me explain it and help me understand.

That being said brah, overall your guess on what the left would glom onto hasn't panned out. For context, I listen to Ed Schultz and Randi Rhodes many days. They haven't really focused on the ebay plan or the unwed mothers charge. They have pointed out her close ties to the AIP, which I tend to agree with, and her abuse of power, firing everyone as Mayor, and troopergate, which I also agree, is something that disqualifies her for VP.

...more on the plane. Putting things on ebay was actually a fairly common practice in the Alaska legislature and good for them! So though a cool idea, Palin didn't invent it. That being said, she never said she did. I don't begrudge her this story. The plane wasn't really a "luxury jet" more like a shuttle for state business including the transpo of prisoners and wooing business. And the state ended up taking a bath on the whole deal. But again, I don't think this is a big issue or worth digging much deeper into.

Sarah Palin only lied about the plane on ebay if and only if one came away with the conclusion she implied she sold it on ebay. The liberal blogosphere hasn't assumed or implied this was a lie. In that regard, you are wrong in your assumption. HuffPo for example was pretty clear in its analysis. No, she didn't lie about putting the plane on ebay. They did however dig deeper into the story. Which I admit is compelling. I like the idea of a politician putting something publicly owned up for sale on ebay, something millions of Americans are familiar with. (I got a sweet jersey of my favorite all time hockey player off ebay for a song!)
