Out with Longmont's Old Political Machine
There are many of us who have lived in Longmont for years who are well aware of the way politics work in this town, and are we fed up with it. The old money families of Longmont and their cronies who believe they own this town and have the inherent right to run it. Among their group are landowners, realtors, developers and the family who has owned the newspaper here for years. People with money and a controlled media equal power. For years that has proven successful in getting their people elected. Combine that with a city manager appointed by their politicos 14 years ago and kept in office by their successors. Their city manager, who crafts the city’s budget and annually sets the agenda for this city making sure things get done the way they want. Check this year’s line-up: Gabe Santos, Bonnie Finley, Aaron Rawlins and Roger Lange. All are hand picked, groomed and sold to the voters by the political machine that has controlled elections here for years. Each of them willing to promote the realtors and developers. And what will the voters get in return? A city infrastructure that is slowly deteriorating, a growing gang problem, depressed property values along with lower city revenues, and an indifferent council that looks the other way. It’s time for the citizens of Longmont to say no to this group. It is time for change. This year’s council election gives us opportunity for change. We are electing a Mayor and three council seats. There are many of us who have lived in Longmont for years who are well aware of the way politics work in this town, and are we fed up with it. The old money families of Longmont and their cronies who believe they own this town and have the inherent right to run it. It's time for the citizens of Longmont to say no to this group. It is time for change. This year's council election gives us opportunity for change. We are electing a Mayor and three council seats. We citizens of Longmont have the first real opportunity in years to take our town back and elect those who have our interests at heart. We have the opportunity to move our city in the necessary direction. Say no to the old politics and yes for change.

Rebecah. I don't know how long you have lived her. If it’s been over a decade then either you haven’t paid attention or you have a short memory. I have been here 57 years. I have seen that which I address above. Status quo has created the serious issues that have erupted to the surface here in recent years. It was bound to happen and did. The constructive alternatives are offered in my article above. If that doesn't satisfy you then vote for more of the same offered by those who have controlled the way this city has run for years and created the downward spiral. We are paying the piper. Gangs, narcotics distribution, prostitution, decay in lower income areas, a deteriorating infrastructure cast against growth and lining the pockets of the developers and feeding of sacred cows at the sake of your future. Compare your city to others close by and see the difference. It rests in city hall and those elected and the ones they appoint to manage. Open your eyes. Clearly the choice is yours.

Do you have any recommendations for people I should vote FOR? Every now and then, I would love to hear reasons FOR voting for someone rather than hearing what is wrong with all the candidates, the system and the place I live. I would love to find candidates who believe as I do, but it's apparently much easier to blast the status quo than offer constructive alternatives.

But to the main point of this blog..I sure am no friend to the higher-ups in city staff and some of their ties to the paper, I've been a direct and indirect target for them, so don't expect to see me run to their defense. This inner-circle you and others describe MAY or MAY NOT exist (if it does, I'm surely not a part of it), but you're impugning these 4 candidates based on these baseless assumptions (got proof?) isn't fair. How about saying what's "right" with yours without saying what's "wrong" about others?

..and I've said something like that when exactly? I don't have to blurt nonsense like that, leave it to you guys. As far as "hand picked" candidates? I've seen this a few times, what is this based on? Some conspiracy going on with black helicopters or something? If anything, those 4 candidates pushed as a "block" in TC advertising would fit that bill more. Fear not, half of them will probably be there come January.

Well said! With luck, we'll be ABLE to do it this coming election cycle. I think even the shut-ins (physical AND mental) have finally eaten enough clue-flakes to get the daily recommended dose of wits to see that going along with the endless CronyFest(tm) isn't making Longmont better.
