Blog Entry 10 of 24 Another Home Office Inmate
Just another web consultant whose boss is a complete slave driver. But I take my revenge by reading - a lot - when he's not looking. I believe in the role of government to help improve society, but I'm fully aware of the dangers of entrenched bureacracy and the how money corrupts. I'm not so much a liberal as I am appalled by what passes for modern conservatism. And as the pendulum swings back and the left finds its voice and strength again, I'm ready to damn its excesses. "To you, I'm an atheist. To God, I'm the loyal opposition."

Musgrave: I See Chinese People
Contributed by: Ralph Dosser   on 7/2/2008

Republican Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave repeated Monday a lie told by Dick Cheney, falsely claiming that China is drilling for oil 60 miles off the Florida coast in Cuban waters.

In an article in The Coloradoan, Musgrave was reported as repeating Cheney's June 12 whopper, which he was forced to retract when experts reported that, well, it simply wasn't true.

"Oil is being drilled right now 60 miles off the coast of Florida," Cheney said. "We're not doing it, the Chinese are, in cooperation with the Cuban government."

The Yellow Peril! A virtual stone's throw from Disneyland and the Daytona Speedway!

When confronted with that fact that it wasn't true, Cheney's office later issued a statement saying he had "erred." But that hasn't stopped multiple GOP congresscritters - including Musgrave - from repeating the lie.

The Coloradoan reported:

"Musgrave, when told of the [Cheney] retraction, said she would have her staff look into it. Chief of Staff Guy Short later said Musgrave misspoke about Chinese drilling."

Musgrave "misspoke" while promoting her proposed legislation to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil drilling. It would divert an unspecified amount of the tax revenues towards renewable energy research, and forbid the U.S. from selling weapons to Saudi Arabia if that country's oil production drops below 10 million barrels per day.

Oddly enough, she has no Republican co-sponsors for legislation that would threaten the Bush family's closest friends and business partners, the Saudi royal family.

Let's face it - it's an empty gesture with no chance of succeeding, and Musgrave's strategists/handlers know that. It's pure election-year posturing.

Musgrave has grim prospects for re-election this year. Her opponent, Democrat Betsy Markey, has got an edge in the polls and is receiving support from a number of party and independent groups.

Good grief!! The guy misspoke!! The Chinese ARE in cooperation with the Cubans to drill off the coast of Florida - right now!! The fact that they haven't actually started drilling yet is of little significance when you consider our left-wing environmentalists won't let us drill. Haven't you liberals ever said something that didn’t quite come out like you meant?? The point wasn't whether the Chinese are actually drilling, it was that they can (drill) and we can't!! And it's in OUR WATERS!! Can someone explain how that makes sense?? On the other hand, Marilyn "Farm Bill" Musgrave should have known better. She doesn't get to slide because she had time to review what she termed as a policy statement before regurgitating it whereas Cheney's remark was off-the-cuff. I wish someone would run against her in the primary...

Always solid posts Ralph. I thought the Chinese were the 'Red Menace' and to be feared...? Oh wait, that was YESTERDAY. Now they're our pals... uh huh. RIGHT. Oh, and offshore drilling is safe. I have a reminder for the loons about 'oil safety' - EXXON VALDEZ. Go tell the Alaskans.

Many e-mails circulate about China drilling. I must confess I copied and pasted this blog to e-mail to get the truth out there!

I shouldn't be surprised but I am still when I see someone rate and run a post that's 100% factually accurate and they don't have the courage to either admit that or give a response as to why they disagree. I also shouldn't be surprised that Musgrave used this line. When Dick Cheney has to admit to a lie, you know it was a lie. His own party called him out for it. This is what the Republicans do, lie and scare the American people while blaming the Democrats for their own failures.

Oh, this is just the beginning. Don't forget there's huge amounts of money at stake. Expect the absolute worst. 'Mis-speaking' is just the start.
