Blog Entry 1 of 36 The Economic Illiterate
I hate politics. I didn't use to but somewhere between now and about 12 years ago politics has become a one-way street. It seems that anyone who is into politics knows only their street and it has become frustrating. I believe I can make the better argument (for the conservative side that is) with just the facts nearly every time. When it comes to mainstream discussion, I don't believe I've met my match. And it has gotten me all the way to nowhere and back again. But the free markets are a different story. It is a subject that one can study forever and never truly be an expert. To some degree we're all economically illiterate, some more than others. I would likely write mostly about the economic peril we face in this country. Of course if I see anything ridiculous posted by some leftie, I may find it difficult not to jump in even though I know it won't have any effect whatsoever.

Left-wing lies and ANWR
Contributed by: David Brown   on 7/28/2008

ANWR is a region of approximately 19 million acres. The ANWR coastal plain is a region approximately 30 miles wide and 100 miles long at its widest. That's a total of 1.5 million acres. It's the coastal plain where we want to drill. Make no mistake, most of ANWR is beautiful but those beautiful areas are not - I repeat, NOT where we want to drill.

You can see the area of ANWR that we are interested in drilling. How would you describe it?? "Pristine?" "Beautiful?" 'BARREN WASTELAND??"

So why are these environmentalist extremists blatantly lying about ANWR? Party because they think you're stupid but mostly because it's driven by their virtual hatred of all things oil. They want us off oil, which isn't so bad in itself but in the process of not having any viable alternative options (how do we get to work??) or infrastructure in place, they think nothing about $8 oil which would send us straight into a recession. The bankruptcy of lower and middle class Americans means nothing to the people they claim to care about most, which is a shame.

So here we have liberals advocating policy that will destroy the country which also happens to serve their indignation when the rest of us call them on their positions which undermine the country.

One of the reasons why I like this board is bacause it requires you to constantly question what you know, or think you know. This is an interesting site - I get into this kind of thing too. Parts of this site will break your heart and other parts will pique your optimism. http://response.restoration.noaa.gov/topic_subtopic_entry.php?RECORD_KEY%28entry_subtopic_topic%29=entry_id,subtopic_id,topic_id&entry_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=418&subtopic_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=27&topic_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=3

They can drill now, they don't. They want more. These are our public lands but what do we get but the privilege of being dependent on their product? If you want to call this hate, so be it. I call it a threat to our national security interests and commercial interests. I call it capitalism run amok. People die, habitats and livelihoods destroyed after promises and assurances they won't happen. Not on my watch.

We don't accept your arguments because they aren't good enough for us. Too many conservatives claim everything will be safe, everything will be clean, and then some tanker runs aground and millions of barrels are dumped into the ocean which winds up on our shores and it doesn't go away. Y'all act like it can just be soaked up with a rag. That devastation lasts and will last long after we are dead and gone and for what? Cheaper gas and record profits for a handful of fat cats and share holders. No thanks. Because they have leases now and refuse to drill on them, and because they are not refining at 100% capacity, and because they are reaping record profits each quarter it leads me to believe that big oil is merely trying to get as much as they can and they have payed enough politicians to get whatever they want.

"So what if we did?" That's why I am against drilling in ANWR because when the veil is pulled back conservatives don't care if other people's lives are ruined or if the environment far away from their eyes is ruined. Cons only care about themselves and no one else. Thank you for illustrating that so well.

The conservative mantra is the future be damned when we can profit now!

The big lie (I wish your side hadn't started overusing that word re: Bush/Iraq. Now we're all doing it.) is that for years and years all we heard since Clinton vetoed the original ANWR bill was "we can't drill in this pristine, area that is untouched by man." We believed the pristine part and countered in recent years with the technology argument, which wasn't persuasive. The big lie is that the area we wanted to drill in all along is more desolate than the moon. We couldn't possiby damage that area and so what if we did? I mean that - so what if we did? And we also know the tech. argument didn't stand a chance because the left won't be persuaded, period. They deny all arguments, no matter how well presented. The whole thing is a lie.

You said, "What makes you think oil companies are going to drill in the new areas?" Because they know where the oil is. Simple as that - they don't have to go looking for like they do in those leased areas. If you don't think it will happen, then open them up! You've got nothing to lose.

And what's the big liberal lie here? And we're also in a reccesion right now. Remeber how in 2004 Bush promised to halve the deficit he and the Republicans ran up by this time. He doubled it. McCain will triple it. I know it's off topic but it has to be said. Trickle down, corporate interests first economics doesn't work.

But David you are failing to understand something. What makes you think oil companies are going to drill in the new areas? The oil companies can drill, can explore and refine more right now! In essence they are holding us hostage. We won't up the supply until you hand over more acres to use. Here's your link, http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo/otheranalysis/ongr.html, this confirms what I have been saying. Why give big oil something when they won't do something for us? Did you see the record profits for Exxon? Only 1% of their profits going to alternative energy sources. Seems they owe us more than what they're giving. This is your market at work.
