Blog Entry 120 of 192 The Subversive Liberal
"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

The God Squad
Contributed by: Bing Van Gorden   on 12/8/2007

Tis the Season for some Christians in America to insist that it's time for celebration of their savior and theirs alone. Such well meaning folks don't realize how incredibly selfish and wrong headed they are. By taking the personal and making it public in this way they are exhibiting ignorant pride. That's a sin, I'm told. The God squad, Christian God of course, trot out their tired arguments and weak assertions that they are under siege because our governments act as if they represent everybody and not just the chosen, them. "We are a Christian Nation!" they cry. And offer as proof all kinds of proclamations from our founding fathers about how great God is. Thankfully they chose to leave God out of our government purposely to keep one group of zealots from persecuting other groups of zealots.

Enter Mormon Willard Mitt Romney and his recent speech designed to lay to rest the fears of other sects of Christians that even though he belonged to a small and relatively young group of true believers, he could misinterpret the Constitution and be just as intolerant to all the same groups of people. His office still won't confirm that non-believers are Americans too. George HW Bush once proclaimed they were not, he was President at the time. But it is significant that in the year 2007 a man running for President feels compelled to tell other Christians he is just like them. Religious bigotry knows no bounds even if the saviors the same. I'm sure God is pleased with all the different sects clamoring over him.

I try to avoid the same trap these poor souls fall into by broad brushing large segments of society. There are plenty of good, decent, folks who are tolerant of others and that are Christians. To those people I wish a hardy Merry Christmas with no intent of sarcasm or derogatory accusations. It's the people who insist on using their religion as a wedge that I detest.

The holier than thou types who use the Bible as a weapon in the same spirit used to justify slavery now justifies their animosity towards homosexuals. The ones who have assumed the role of judges, condemning others for even being tolerant and respectful to fellow citizens. The bigots in Colorado Springs. The Phelps celebrating the death of our soldiers because we are a country that "tolerates" behavior they consider to be an abomination. All because of little words in a book and the feeble minds that use and discard passages to justify their hatred toward their fellow man.

This religious fervor got Bush a whole lot of votes. Because he calls himself a man of God and shares the same intolerance, they vote for him as if he were the savior himself. Ironic that a man responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians and hundreds of radicals of Islam gets mentioned in the same breath as Jesus Christ. Apparently they prefer the vengeful God and ignore his son's teachings regarding non-violence. We live in dangerous times. For some true believers the "End Times." It seems our President is hell bent (pun intended) on destabilizing the "holy land," the military under him has begun a campaign of evangelical proselytization, and he has admitted to having a dialogue with God. Don't blame Bush for invading Iraq, after all, "God" told him to. I think it might have been the devil in disguise.

So enjoy this holiday season folks. It could be our last. Because the End Times isn't religion specific. If a batch of homicidal Christian soldiers continues to wage war against a homicidal group of Islamic "martyrs" we will all pay the price for their stupidity. It's times like these I wish the figment of imagination known as God would simply evaporate. Like waking up from a long dark coma, people realize that all this religious posturing is incredibly harmful to us all and so is discarded and in it's place reason takes hold and we turn our backs on the machines of war. Or if God did exist he'd show himself, cause he's got some 'splainin' to do

Until that day, I urge the God squads to find a cave in the desert and shut themselves in because the end of the world is nye. Leave the rest of us to enjoy what should be a time of all inclusion, peace and harmony. Take Mike Huckabee with you, that guy is absolutely nuts with God fever.

Thanks Karin, I hear what your saying and there is the crux of the issue. What to do about people insisting on proselytizing others and remain a free country where we ar efree to believe or not as we see fit? I too was raised in a Christian household, well partially, my father is an atheist. Jesus did say "render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar's." One of my ironic twists is I actually really dig Jesus Christ. His statements most directly coincide with my world view. I'm sur eif he were alive today he'd have a few corrections to make among his followers.

I have been reading with interest your recent blogs about God and separation of church and state. As a person with no faith (perhaps an atheist by default), I forgive proselytizing. If a person really believes you are doomed for all eternity without his faith, it may be a moral imperative for him to convert you. Some people just have trouble with effective/inoffensive technique. On the flip side, having been raised a Christian, I'm pretty sure Jesus make clear distinctions between spiritual and earthly matters like government, indicating one had nothing to do with the other.
