Firehouse Quilts, a Friend Indeed!

Volunteers of Firehouse Quilts have been friends with the Douglas/Elbert Task Force in Castle Rock for several years. In November 2006, they delivered 32 snuggle quilts to Suzanne Greene, Executive Director of the Douglas/Elbert Task Force.

These snuggle quilts have been available in the 'Birthday Room' at the Douglas/Elbert Task Force ever since. When a parent doesn't have the money to buy their child a birthday gift, they are encouraged to come to the Birthday Room and choose a couple of gifts for them. During the holiday season, the 'Birthday Room' becomes a place where parents can choose holiday gifts for their children if they can't afford to buy some.

In early December 2007, Firehouse Quilts volunteers delivered an additional 23 quilts, just in time for Christmas. As you can see, there's a huge variety of colors and patterns in the quilts donated.

On October 22, 2008, they delivered 72 more quilts, just in time for the holidays. This year, there are even more people that are affected by the economy, loosing jobs, rising debt, no pay raises, family members moving in with them, etc.

In addition to the quilts donated this year, they brought with them 10 sets of the cutest crocheted baby caps with matching booties to be given to new mothers with infants. They were crocheted by volunteers of Warm Hearts, Warm Babies and donated to Firehouse Quilts by Judy Rosich to go with our deliveries.

Knowing that their quilt delivery was coming up, several Firehouse Quilts volunteers saw Suzanne Greene on the local news showing how empty her Food Bank shelves were and how dire the need is. They quickly put together a last minute food drive in Firehouse Quilts, including neighbors, friends and co-workers. Thanks to everyone that donated, they delivered 2 car loads of food and baby items at the same time they made the quilt delivery.

"We had a great time, doing what we love to do, helping others in our community." said Dusty Darrah, organizer of Firehouse Quilts.
