My Hispanic Network
Contributed by: Go MHN on 5/4/2007

My Hispanic Network has launched a brand new, hybrid website concentrated on connecting the diverse and dispersed Hispanic community. The website, www.gomhn.com was created to connect English speaking Hispanics to resources, history, culture and each other.

The vibrant site delivers quality articles, political commentary, networking, and a mix of multimedia for a growing and largely neglected demographic. The site touches on relevant topics such as racial profiling and immigration but also communicates the spirit of the Hispanic community through arts and entertainment.

My Hispanic Network is an engaging website that puts invaluable resources at the fingertips of all Hispanics. Categories for Professionals, Latinas, College Students, Teens, and Kids can be found along with resources that are pertinent to each group.

The website does a superb job of balancing between a newsworthy source and a robust networking site. MHN ( www.gomhn.com) provides professional networking and social networking access for all users for free. Although My Hispanic Network delivers in English, the Spanish language is not abandoned. At www.gomhn.com users are able to brush up on Spanish through the "Learn Spanish" category or engage in Spanish chat through the MHN Forum.

Check it out for yourself.

What is a Hispanic or Latino anyhow? The terms are mostly used in the U.S. Does it mean that you speak Spanish or that one of your ancestors did? It's not a race as Latin American itself is a diversity of decedents of Spanish and many others Europeans, but also a multitude of various Native American tribes, and people from India and Africa. There is also not a homogeneous culture in "Latin" America. So what is a Latino? Someone from Latin? Oh right, that's not a place but an antiquated language whose geographical center was modern day Italy. Why are Italian Americans lumped into the "white people" genera when Spain and Portugal are further from the old center of Latin speakers. The terms Hispanic and Latino are as ridiculous as if there were a special word like Englishian for someone whose ancestors once came from an English speaking country like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the U.K. or the U.S. before migrating to a Spanish speaking country.
