Ken Nichols of Loveland placed second in the 2008 "Ollie, Ollie Oxen Free" Story Slam with "The Song and Dance Man," a Karen Ackerman story. He won a full paid admission to the 33rd annual Rocky Mountain Storytellers' Conference in Broomfield, Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26. Ken placed first in the 2006 "Ollie, Ollie Oxen Free" Story Slam and was not eligible to compete in 2007.

The 2008 "Ollie, Ollie Oxen Free" Story Slam was the 3rd annual story slam in honor of Elm Farm Ollie, the first cow milked while flying in an airplane. The story slam is the brainchild of Sunny Marie Hackman and Cheri Seeton, two storytellers invested in reviving the powerful oral art of storytelling.

Each year in February ten storytellers are drawn at random from registrations received for the event which is held in March at the Lakewood Heritage Center, 801 S. Yarrow Street, in the historic schoolhouse. The Whole Foods Market in Belmar and the Lakewood Heritage Center have sponsored this popular event for the past three years.

In addition to the adult slam this year, Sunny Marie and Cheri saw their vision of having a story slam for youth, ages 12-18, come to life, partnering with Elsa Wolff as MC and organizer. Eight youth competed in the first annual youth story slam which was held in the afternoon. Joy Jowers of Littleton won the Youth Division for her portrayal of Anne of Green Gables.

"You do a fantastic job. This was truly a fun community event," remarked one audience member. "Thank you!"

"The variety of stories and presentation styles is astonishing," said Cheri Seeton, "from living history protrayals to stories incorporating magic, musical instruments and song." Sunny Marie Hackman added, "We have sold out for the past three years. Community support for the event is overwhelming."
