Transforming Lust into Love
The Vedic Viewpoint and Other Spiritual Perspectives
What is this thing that everyone calls love? Real love is selfless, pure and beyond the material conception. In this material world there is no real love, it is a perverted reflection of the actual absolute love, which resides only on the spiritual platform.
Why do we seek love in this world? The answer according to the Vedas is because there is an original Divine Love, an all attractive, Divine and Loving, Supreme Couple, whom which we all stem from. We seek love because, They are love personified. We cannot have it or want it unless They have it. God is love, and His Divine Counterpart is also Love. Love means relationship, and they are the Supreme Relationship, also known as Radha and Krishna, or Laksmi, Narayan, or Sita Rama. Don't think God is alone- He is always with His Feminine Counterpart, which many religions took out or left out that very important aspect. (The Divine Goddess) They are the original Divine Loving relationship that we in this material world are trying to imitate. In this world these relationships are based on lust and desire for self and sense gratification. In the absolute world Love is the opposite. If we want to have a loving relationship with the opposite sex, we have to put God in the center of our relationship; otherwise it will only be based on lust. All of our activities have to be centered around God and then we can transcend this lust, which burns like fire and always ends in misery or eventually death. This may sound bleak or negative but this is the reality and you can realize it if you really look at it deeply...
Did you know that Cupid is a real person? He is a designated Superintendent or angel of material so called love. He actually shoots subtle arrows of lust into the hearts of living entities, to keep them in this material world life after life. That is his job. Have you ever experienced an intense crush on someone or a feeling of desire for someone that was so painfully strong? That was Cupids' arrow that got you. Another name for God is Madhana Mohana which means- the attractor of Cupid. If one takes shelter of God they can get beyond Cupids piercing arrows and transcend this inebriating bondage of lust.
According to the Vedic knowledge, the closest thing to pure love in this material world is a mother and child relationship, but we can see especially in this age how that falls short.
If we want to have a loving relationship, then we have to put God in the center of it. Offer your Relationship to God in Marriage and then serve each other by bringing one another closer to Him, or Them. If we want real love, we have to learn the process of serving God with love and devotion, which is called Bhakti yoga. Bhakti yoga is the process of serving God with our propensities in love and devotion. It is very scientific. Yes, real love is actually scientific, though it sounds contradictory. Pleasing God or the Divine Couple with what They would like, not our own mundane desires, is real love. It is simple for the simple and for the rest it is very difficult. A child can understand how to please and love, but many adults have become so complicated that they think they need to do bodily poses and breathing exercises to love God. But that is not love of God that is love of Bod. If one is simple and pure enough to accept this process, then they can attain the highest pleasure of ecstatic divine love of God, beyond material lust. But you won't because you have too much lust to even try for it. But the process is given and it is easy. The process for reawakening this pure, divine love, which is within everyone's heart, is the chanting of the Maha Mantra.
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
How can a mantra awaken real love? - Because this mantra is non different from God, being that God and His Name are Absolute. (One and the same) This mantra is God. Gods names are non sectarian, they are eternal and beyond any religious designations. If one practices this chanting and follows the other Processes of Bhakti Yoga, they will come to the point of Divine Love and have no taste for this so called material love, which is really just glorified lust and binds one to the miserable, material condition of life.
