The Orchard Town Center to Host Summer Concert Series May Through August
"Concerts on the Square" feature Hazel Miller, The Fab Four and Wendy Woo
The Orchard Town Center today announced the launch of its summer concert series "Concerts on the Square." Beginning May 30, The Orchard Town Center will be THE place to be on Friday nights throughout the summer, with live performances by some of the best bands in the Denver metro area.
Music will be presented from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring friends, families, pets and lawn chairs. Three of the center's restaurants - Mexico Cantina, Rock Bottom Brewery and The Woodlands - offer patio dining just off the square, so concertgoers have the option to dine while enjoying the festivities.
The 2008 "Concerts on The Square" schedule features:
May 30 - The Nacho Men: The unique combination of dance music, costume changes, choreography and humor make The Nacho Men one of Colorado's favorite musical performance groups.
June 6 - Steve Thomas: It's not uncommon to hear someone ask, "How does he hit those notes?" when Steve Thomas begins to sing. Listeners have compared his voice with the likes of Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald and Stevie Wonder, and yet it is uniquely his own. His amazing band brings the '80s back to life.
June 13 - Hazel Miller: When Hazel Miller was in third grade, she saw Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Nancy Wilson performing on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and told her mother, "That's what I want to do." Her will to succeed and to thrill audiences with her versatile voice - equally at home with hard-edged blues or sultry jazz numbers - is as hard-driving as her band's beat on Aretha Franklin's signature "Respect."
June 20 - Jakarta: If nonstop dancing to all your favorite songs is what you want, then Jakarta is it. Known for its high energy, this interactive nine-piece dance band plays a variety of old-school funk and R&B from the '70s, '80s and '90s.
June 27 - Nelson Rangel: Jazziz magazine writes that Nelson Rangel is "an artist of depth, a master of song and an improviser nonpareil." Such praise is a confirmation of what contemporary-jazz fans have known since the Denver-based saxophonist emerged in the late '80s.
July 4 - The Fab Four: The Fab Four will take you back to a time when four lads from Liverpool ruled the world of music. They are considered to be Colorado's premier Beatles tribute band.
July 11 - Wendy Woo: Multicultural in both heritage and outlook, Woo displays a blend of soul, vibrancy and wild-child attitude. A passionate live performer who connects instantly with her audiences, she presents songs that are wide-ranging in style, from down-and-dirty blues to defiant ex-lover funk, from summer-day sambas to wistful ballads.
July 18 - Pan Jumbies: This steel-drum band comprises some of the best musicians in Colorado and Florida. Many of the players owe much to Trinidad, which gave them experience working with the bands Carib Tokyo, Hummingbirds Pan Groove, Phase II Pan Groove and TLC Skiffle Bunch during Panorama and the Steel Band Music Festival.
July 25 - Conjunto Colores: One of Colorado's hottest salsa and Latin-jazz bands, Conjunto Colores has opened for the Tito Puente Orchestra, Sonora Poncena, Bob James, Willie Colon and Ruben Blades, just to name a few.
Aug. 1 - Dotsero: Taking its name from a small mountain town in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Dotsero means "something unique" according to Ute Native American legend. As much fun to watch as it is to listen to, Dotsero is a thrill ride of energy and excitement.
Aug. 8 - Judge Roughneck: Repeatedly voted Denver's best ska/reggae act, Judge Roughneck has gained both commercial success and critical acclaim. Judge Roughneck's unique brand of pop reggae pays tribute to the early-'80s British Two-Tone movement and the original jazz-laced ska of Jamaica, while infusing a generous dose of soul and R&B.
Aug. 15 - Opie Gone Bad: One of the Rocky Mountain region's most influential bands, Opie Gone Bad has been showing people a good time for more than 10 years. Jake Schroeder's husky baritone fronts an eclectic band that blends guitar-driven rock with a powerhouse funk rhythm section.
Aug. 22 - Pete Wernick: Renowned worldwide for his accomplishments and contributions to bluegrass music, Pete Wernick has performed with many musical legends, including Doc Watson, Bill Monroe and Jerry Garcia.
Aug. 29 - Chris Daniels & The Kings: Chris Daniels & The Kings are one of the world's best horn bands, in the tradition of Blood, Sweat & Tears; Booker T. and the Memphis Horns; and Tower of Power.
