Fourteen years ago, I returned home after work to my Richmond, Virginia apartment and answered the ringing telephone. It was my friend Dave asking if he could pick up my roommate Jamie and I and take us for a ride in his "new" car - a 1959 black Ford Skyliner complete with sleek fins on the back.
I knew what Dave's motivation was - to land a date with gorgeous Jamie who he had had a crush on for years. I agreed we would go because I was desperate for some fun. At the age of 26 I had moved to Richmond two months before to be with my boyfriend, Ken and Ken was , as they say, "blowing me off."
I was working a mundane job as a receptionist for a stuffy investment firm and felt completely out of my element. I needed to get out the house and to be distracted.
The Batmobile pulled up the the apartment minutes later. Jamie was invited into the front seat and I jumped in the back. To my surprise, there was another person waiting inside. This upbeat and cute guy was introduced as Dave's room-mate, Ken. "Yikes, another Ken," I thought. Ken #2, as I called him,was drinking Budweiser out of a can and smiling at me. He thought it would be fun to drink a beer, crush it and throw the can out the window. Strangely enough, this sounded fun to me too, probably because I was 26 and bored. We began teasing each other and sharing details about our lives. Mostly, Ken #2 simply made me laugh and I was flattered by his interest in me. There was no denying the instant connection. By the time we were dropped back at the apartment, I knew I'd see Ken#2 again.
After several secret dates over the next few weeks, Ken #2 moved into Ken #1's spot. In our future would be a move to Colorado two years later, an engagement, a wedding and two children. We have now been married for 11 years and are still going strong. (Jamie and Dave, on the other hand, went their separate ways). The things that brought us together that day in the back of the '59 Ford - playfulness, laughter and kindness toward one another - are still what bind us today. Love you baby!

Great story, Beth -- althought I was expecting a quite different story after I read the headline!
