Mead: Keeping Clean and Going Green!
Contributed by: MK Mercurio on 3/29/2008

Keeping Clean:

Did you see the Adopt-a-Highway sign on Highway 66? The Rotary Club of Mead has adopted a 2-mile stretch of messy, dirty, yucky highway that is all happy and sparkly clean now. Before the project began, the rotary club viewed a dvd supplied by the Department of Transportation (DOT), alerting us of some hazadous material that could be in the waste.

Cans, bottles, small liquor bottles, tires and food wrappers topped the list along with those big cardboard signs that point to the new housing developments along Highway 66. The cleanup took two weekends and sixteen volunteers to help gather the trash. On the second weekend over 50 large trash bags were filled to overflowing and left for the DOT to collect.

In the next few months, you'll see us out there again. We'll be the happy-go-lucky bunch dressed in orange and green vests working to keep our community clean. If you see us, BEEP to say hello! (And remember, DON'T LITTER!)

Going Green:

The Rotary Club of Mead is making a difference in the way we treat the environment. Each spring and fall the Town of Mead has a 'Clean-Up Weekend' and the town residents are allowed to dump their trash at a central location in Mead.

Last fall, while working at the dump site, the local Rotarians realized that items in good condition were being dumped when they could be recycled. This year, during the spring clean up, the Rotary Club of Mead is asking participants to fill out a brief survey about their recycling habits. The goal of the Rotary Club of Mead is to work with eco*cycle in the fall and find a way to recycle and reuse as much as possible.

Agencies such as ReStore Home Improvement Outlet that sell used furniture, construction material and appliances will be contacted to see if they can reuse some items.

Eco*cycle is known for recycling computers, laptops, cell phones and other electronics for a fee. The survey will inform town residents about the enhanced recycling and will get feedback on recycling habits. Recycling crutches, electronics, furniture and other usable items is a win-win for everyone, right?

The Rotary Club of Mead meets every Friday morning in the Mead Town Hall at 7 am for breakfast and the meeting begins at 7:30 am. Rotary International's motto is "Service Above Self" and The Rotary Club of Mead is involved in a host of activities. If you want to know more about what we do, contact me at mk_mercurio@yahoo.com.

It's getting to be clean up time again. But this time, I'm almost certain that there will be little to NO litter left behind. Right? If you see a crew out there on Hwy 66 - be sure to beep 'Hello'!
