Graduation ceremony held for six CWEE participants

On Friday, September 4, The Center for Work Education and Employment (CWEE) held a graduation ceremony for six program participants in honor of their receiving a General Educational Development (GED) diploma.

During the graduation ceremony, each graduate was given a chance to speak to the attendees and tell them what CWEE meant to them. The graduates' families honored them by presenting their loved ones with a rose - a symbol of the better life that lies ahead.

Ben Wallace, one of the graduates, was recently laid off from his job in the fast food industry. He then decided to pursue his passion of computers, but was unable to achieve his dream without a high school diploma or GED. At this point, Ben became worried about not being able to provide for his three children Daniel, 3, Marie, 8, and Kristy, 10. He turned to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program for help and was introduced to CWEE. He immediately enrolled in their GED program so he could provide a better life for himself and his family.

"Ben's story is like that of the other five graduates," said Laurie Harvey, executive director of CWEE. "At CWEE, we help men and women just like Ben learn valuable business skills so that they can find a good job to support their families."

Since its inception in 1982, CWEE has helped more than 9,500 low-income adults prepare for, find and keep reliable employment. Today, CWEE continues to prepare single parents and families for long-term employment, enabling them to achieve self-sufficiency and end their dependency on TANF. In addition to their GED program, CWEE provides their participants with basic skills, computer certificates and job readiness courses.
