It's a summertime highlight for families and it only comes around once a year! Mark your calendar now for West Metro Fire Rescue's Family Fire Muster. This day of fire fighting fun and life saving learning gives families the chance to hang with the fire fighters as they learn skills to make them safer. Dozens of hands-on activities for kids of all ages feature practical fun safety lessons in a fun, carefree environment. Kids and parents love this opportunity to laugh, play, and learn together. Admission is FREE for this outdoor learning extravaganza featuring fire engines and other big rescue trucks.
Did you know that having a working smoke alarm and practicing an escape plan can double your chances of surviving a house fire? Each year there are nearly 400,000 house fires in the United States, killing almost 3,200. Recent fires in the metro area have illustrated how deadly and dangerous fires can be. One of the activities at the Family Fire Muster is the Safe Escape where children enter a house filled with theatrical smoke and get to practice exiting a window. Through this activity, children will learn why smoke rises and why they need to CRAWL LOW UNDER SMOKE. They'll learn what a smoke alarm sounds like and that when they hear that sound, they need to GET OUT AND STAY OUT. They'll learn that fire fighters will do their best to save their pets, toys, and books, and that they need to focus on just getting out. Families will also learn the importance of having a SAFE MEETING PLACE for family members to meet after a fire or emergency occurs. This helps families make sure everyone is accounted for. Each child who makes it to the Family Fire Muster's safe meeting place gets a free 7-11 Slurpee as a reward.
