Summit designed to transform education in Longmont
Contributed by: Rigo Leal on 3/8/2007

The Longmont community is embarking upon what may be the most important initiative of the last five years - an initiative that will have profound effects not only on individual success but on our capacity as a community to thrive in the future.

The mission is to partner with education providers to offer lifelong educational opportunities to each and every member of our community.

The mission begins on Saturday, March 17 with a community-wide education summit called Learn Today - Change Your World Tomorrow. Community members of all ages and all walks of life are participating in in-depth conversations about the importance of lifelong learning.

The summit begins with a keynote address by noted futurist and author Glen Hiemstra ( www.futurist.com) who will discuss future trends and how education is foundational to our sustainability in a global economy. Throughout the day, participants will engage in a variety of activities to increase our understanding of the current challenges and to explore promising practices that can transform Longmont into a community where all children and adults can succeed in school and in life.

Cities across the nation are realizing that municipal governments, but more importantly, community organizations, businesses and residents, can make astounding contributions to the success of students when collaborative action is taken by all in concert. The Longmont Education Rask Force believes that Longmont can lead the nation by mobilizing community energy to offer technical, scientific, workforce, arts and civic learning opportunities and support to supplement the academic rigor offered students by our education providers - no matter whether pre-school, K-12, college or lifelong learners.

There are a variety of ways for community members to participate during and after the summit. For more information about the summit or to offer your services call the Longmont City Manager's Office at 303- 651-8634.

With your help we will take the first steps to strengthen the entire community's capacity to address key educational challenges that lie ahead.
