Homelessness and Hunger Awareness event Nov. 17
Contributed by: Tony Brewer on 11/7/2005

On, Nov. 17 the Longmont Housing Opportunities Team will be sponsoring a Homelessness and Hunger Awareness event as part of National Hunger and Homelessness  Awareness Week.  The event will be held at Life Bridge Church , 10345 Ute Highway , at 6:30 p.m.
Guest speaker, Mike Yanoski, will address participants at 7 p.m. While Mike, who grew up in Colorado, was a college student, he took 6 months off from school to become homeless by choice. He and a friend lived on the streets of some of the toughest cities of the United States , sleeping under bridges, eating
from trash cans, and begging to survive. They chose to do this not only to better understand the plight of the American homeless, but more specifically, to observe how communities of faith were interacting with this marginalized corner of American society.
Yanoski’s new book, Under the Overpass, captures his journey on the streets and relates
the people and experiences that forever changed his life. Now, nearly 2 years later, Mike
has a passion to push caring communities to stronger action to address the country’s
growing problem of homelessness.
National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (November 13-19) is a national endeavor to promote education, action, and awareness about hunger and homelessness. Every year, the first full week before  Thanksgiving is designated as a time for local communities across the country to engage in awareness-raising events with regard to those of our city and towns who are suffering from hunger and homelessness.

Longmont Housing Opportunities Team is sponsoring this important effort in the St.Vrain Valley. LHOT community network of people, organizations and churches formed to address homelessness in the Longmont area.
The 2005 Homeless Point-In-Time Study found that are nearly 700 people who are homeless in the City of Longmont , three times what is was five years ago. In addition, the St. Vrain Valley School District has identified more than 700 students who are without a secure home.
Organizations dealing with homelessness, hunger and related problems will display information about their services and volunteer offerings, giving event participants opportunities to help tackle hunger and homelessness close to home. Additionally, information on the incidence of hunger and homelessness in the community will be available.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. However, participants are encouraged to bring a can of food, socks or winter gloves for distribution to persons who are homeless.
