Roger Lange
, a financial advisor for Lange and Associates and current Longmont City Council member, has won the Longmont mayoral race.
He beat out
Karen Benker
, another city council member, for the position.
Doug Brown
, the third candidate for mayor and a city council member for Ward I, had also filed to run for mayor but withdrew from the race Oct. 9.
Lange, who didn't return calls from
YourHub.com
seeking comment, will take office along with the other city council election winners Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 3rd Avenue and Kimbark Street.
Benker said that even though she lost the race for mayor, she believes that Longmont will be better off after the election.
"I personally didn't win my own race but I feel Longmont won tonight because we now have four of us on council who have a different view of where our council should go," Benker said. "There were some good things that happened."
Benker said that the city would benefit from electing more progressive members on the city council.
"I didn't win my race tonight, but there has been a huge shift on city council because the other progressive members won," she said. "With the new city council that got elected tonight, we can put a new agenda forward for the city of Longmont --issues like being more action-oriented on environmental issues and (promoting) open government."
Benker will retain her seat on city council until 2009, but hasn't yet decided if she will run for mayor or city council again.
Lange will replace former mayor
Julia Pirnack
.
Prior to working as a financial advisor, Lange had worked for USWest in management and executive positions for 33 years. He has a BSME from South Dakota School of Mines and an MBA from the University of Phoenix.
