Poll: Markey Leads Musgrave
Contributed by: Ralph Dosser on 5/21/2008

A recent poll shows Democratic candidate Betsy Markey leads incumbent Republican Marilyn Musgrave in the race for Colorado's 4th District Congressional seat.

The poll - commissioned by the Markey campaign -
shows her leading Musgrave 43 percent to 36 percent, outside the 4.9% margin of error. The Denver Post has the story.

A Musgrave-commissioned poll released several weeks ago gave Musgrave a 47-42 lead, a dangerously low edge for an incumbent.

Any other year I'd say Markey has a long shot at best. Musgrave has all the advantages of incumbency, resides over a largely rural/Republican district, and has a $1M war chest that's three times Markey's total. But there have been a lot of strong indicators that the tide is flowing hard against the GOP this year. Saddled with an unpopular president, an unpopular war, a sputtering economy and a seemingly endless chain of scandals, the Republicans have been described as in a state of "panic" over their electoral prospects this fall. They've lost three out of three special elections in recent weeks, and most recently got trounced in a deep-red district of Mississippi. What's more, the National Republican Congressional Committee is very low on money this cycle, and won't be in any position to come to her rescue as it has in the past.

Musgrave, who has been a chronically threatened candidate with low re-election margins, may finally get tossed this time around.

UPDATE:

Things are trending blue up-ticket as well, according the latest Rasmussen poll:

Senate (Open)

Schaffer (R) 41 (42)
Udall (D) 47 (45)

President

McCain (R) 42 (43)
Obama (D) 48 (46)

Mr. McCoy.... Point One: there's a big difference between arch or snide criticism and "poison." I admit I freely employ snark as a mode of expression, as Winston Churchill himself did on more than one occasion. But I try hard to avoid ad-hominem attacks such as name-calling, for example, branding someone with the term "elitist," which is apparently the smear of choice this election cycle. Point Two: if you can show me how to post a reply to a thread on this site without either giving yourself high marks or statistically undercutting your rating, I would be grateful. Point Three: I again would like to see somebody challenge the substance of the poll in question (sample size, methodology - anything) rather than simply dismiss it outright. To quote Voltaire, "A witty saying proves nothing."

The true symptom of illness in our political system is the poison political expressions by elitists, such as Longmont's Landmark Commissioner Mr. Wray. Does his appointment as a public official give him the right to hold Longmont's neighbors in Weld County in contempt for exercising their right to vote for who they choose? Mr. Dosser knocks a fellow commentator for expressing the opinion that his statistical story is self-serving. Then awards himself of 5 stars. The late Sir Winston Churchill reminds Americans "Statistics are like a drunk with a lampost: used more for support than illumination" What's wrong with a return to civility both on YourHub and in politics?

Oh, I'm sure the Muskrat will find even lower lows this time around, whether it be using bussed-in homeschoolers from CO Springs to fill seats at a debate (Gods, that was CHEESY!) or worse yet, using them to precinct walk (talk about weak) or just make sure no one she doesn't approve of is allowed in her 'public meetings' (how is that 'representative'???). The fact that this awful person keeps getting re-elected is a SYMPTOM of the illness in Weld County.

First: sentence fragments will get you an "F" in any worthwhile English composition class. Second: what, pray tell, is "serving-bias?" Let's assume you mean it's a "self-serving, biased" article. I'm not affiliated with Markey or her campaign, so I don't see how it's self-serving. Third: I'm trying to figure out what "normal intelligibility in thought" means - it's (ironically) unintelligible. Would you care to actually come up with a cogent argument instead of dismissive and poorly-composed hand-waving?
