Markey gets funding boost vs. Musgrave
Contributed by: Ralph Dosser on 6/19/2008

Betsy Markey, the Democratic challenger to 4th District congressional incumbent Marilyn Musgrave - has gotten a big boost in funding support from her party.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has added Markey to their "Red to Blue" list, meaning they will give her financial, communications, and strategic support. The DCCC press release is here.

Markey was added to the "top tier" list because of her fundraising success and the general effectiveness of her campaign, the DCCC said. She is the only Colorado candidate selected this year.

So what does this mean for Markey? In 2006, the "Red to Blue" program raised nearly $22.6 million for 56 campaigns, giving an average of more than $400,000 per campaign. It seems impossible that both those numbers won't be substantially higher this year.

It's unliikely that the DCCC's counterpart, the National Republican Campaign Committee, will be able to give much help to Musgrave this year. The normally cash-flush outfit had only had $6.7 million on hand April 30 after years of very weak fundraising and a $725,000 embezzlement by their former treasurer.

Markey has also been the beneficiary of fundraising by Act Blue, and there are indications she'll be seeing a strong boost from other progressive "527" groups running ads on her behalf.

Markey could certainly use the money. As of March 31, Musgrave had outraised her by $624,000. But how much the campaigns have on-hand is uncertain. New fundraising numbers should be available after the end of June, and should tell an interesting tale.

A Markey-commissioned poll released in May showed her leading Musgrave 43 percent to 36 percent, outside the 4.9% margin of error, according to The Denver Post. Musgraves own poll released several weeks before that gave Musgrave a 47-42 lead.

No new polling numbers for the Markey/Musgrave race have been released since Barack Obama took the Democratic presidential nomination. Obama's numbers have been on the upswing, and a poll by Rasmussen on May 19 shows him with a 6-point lead over McCain. He's expected to make an enormous money and organizational push in Colorado, which is now considered a crucial swing state.
That effort will almost certainly lift Markey's chances.
