Here is the news on what is happening with the grocery tax repeal:
This petition takes 51 days to reach the council.
21 days to gather signatures.
15 days for the clerk to verify signatures.
15 days for the sponsor to remedy any problems (get more signatures).
What's Next?Gathering of signatures must take place in 21 days. In order to reach the projected goal, 200 signatures need to be gathered each day.
Therefore, it is
im
p
ortant
to have petition gatherers briefed and in place when the forms are printed and approved by the city clerk.
Petitioners need to commit to gathering at least 50 signatures and must be able to return their documents to the organizers before deadline.
The Goal
Get it to the ballot.
The city council has already voiced their concerns. They believe that the measure will pass if voted on by the people of Longmont, yet they still want it defeated.
The council is not representing the wants and needs of the consumers. Take this question to the ballot! Getting the Facts? The finance director has already delivered four different estimations of the amount of revenue predicted to be lost. Each figure being millions higher than the last, some statements only days to hours apart.
The city doesn't have the facts that most people are asking for. Even the city council cannot get this information from the city's taxing authority.
The grocery merchants know what they sell and how much tax is applied to which items, but the city merely receives a tax payment without details. My company is a retailer, we charge our customers appropriate sales taxes, and pass that on to the city. We do not give the city details of what was sold.
We propose that the city does not know what revenue will be lost, because it has not been keeping track of unprepared food sales from any other kind of sales at a grocery store.
Will you volunteer to help voters decide if grocery taxes should be repealed?
Please call 303-651-7919 or 720-323-0570 if you are ready to commit to making a difference.
