Colorado Greyhounds Immigrate to Canada
Contributed by: Jan Woll on 9/22/2007

Many greyhound adoption groups find that black greyhounds are difficult to place. It's an odd prejudice, but a lot of new adopters see the black greyhounds as plain looking or scary. (Little do they know what they are missing.) Imagine our surprise when we got a call from Cindy Montgomery with Chinook Winds Greyhound Rescue in Canada, asking for eight black greyhounds for their adoption group! Could we find them? You bet!

Our first call was to greyhound breeder Al Earl who has one of the finest collections of black greyhounds in Colorado. He had several ready to retire, so filling the order was very easy.

Then began the wait for Cindy and her friends to come pick up the dogs. When the day arrived, we were jealous to see the beautiful trailer they have been able to acquire to transport their adoption dogs. We knew then that our Colorado greyhounds would have a very comfortable trip to their new homes in Canada.

Al kept his dogs at his farm until the morning they were to leave. Of course, Murphy's Law always pops up at the most inopportune moment, and he had a flat tire on his kennel truck. Off we went, in our kennel truck, to rescue Al and our Canada bound hounds.

The Canadians were thrilled to meet their new greyhound friends, the greyhounds were excited to meet new people. After an impromptu playtime, it was time to load the dogs. Al had a chance to say hello to one of his non-black dogs who was at our kennel, looking for a home. Then it was time for us to say good-bye.

Many hours later, the dogs were distributed to the Chinook Winds foster homes in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The adopters in Canada quickly snatched up the new Canadians, and eight beautiful black greyhounds are now in their "retirement" homes, being spoiled rotten.

Thanks to Chinook Winds for caring about Colorado greyhounds, thanks to Al Earl for taking such good care of his dogs, thanks to Torri Morris, the adoption coordinator for Rocky Mountain Greyhound Adoption, for coordinating this trip!
