Do We Need To Train Dogs?
Contributed by: Grace Freebush on 3/19/2008

To many people the answer is obvious "yes." Of course there are those who say "no." Dogs vary immensely just like people do and yes some are smarter then others. Different breeds have their own instinctive behavior. Some like to hunt, some like to herd, some can do tricks and others retrieve. Some breeds multitask and are capable of doing many different things. Does this mean they are trained? No. Does this mean they are smart? Yes.

Dogs, like humans, are in a constant state of learning. They are learning even if we don't notice. Because of the dogs innate variability some dog owners feel their pets are already trained. In some cases the dog owner will be lucky and have few problems in the same way parents have an easy time rearing an individual child. Sad to say some breeds carry a heavy burden and have a bad reputation. This is unfair to the dog, and the dog's owner. I am a believer in the statement, Punish the Deed not the Breed. It is true that Pit Bulls known how to grab on and hold tight. But what they most often grab and refuse to let go of is your heart, not your arm.

No matter what type of dog you have, teaching it the black and white style of obedience training using a language that it can understand and you can practice will develop a positive relations that is fair to you and your dog. So does a dog need training?

The question is open to debate. I have heard, "My dog is trained but it just won't come back when there are distractions." So is the dog trained? Dogs know what "COME" means and if there is nothing more interesting to do or if it has had its fun it will respond. That is not a trained dog. Very few people need a dog to come to them unless there is a good reason to command it to do so. Perhaps the dog is bothering other dogs, children or joggers. Maybe the dog is running off toward a dangerous, busy road. Dogs that come only of their own volition are not obedience trained.

Dogs love to explore. Their noses are always alerting them to interesting things to smell. Dogs love to learn. Your dog is smart and he wants to learn. Very good question. I have had so many dogs run at me and when their owners call them, they don't return. I do wish people would train their dogs. Thank you for the comment about Pit Bulls. They do grab your heart.

Good question. There's a fine line between a "well behaved" or obedient dog and the dog who is allowed to act like a dog does. My wife and I have 6, mostly border collies, they train us more than we train them most of the time. We have one aussie that likes to ignore us at times. Our only option to break him of that seemed to be extensive training that would have sacrificed his goofy nature. We prefer to let him be the dog he is. He's smart enough not to get into too much trouble, and we handle him in public accordingly. At home he will sneak up onto the couch and lay on his back with his legs up in the air and it makes us laugh everytime even though he's being "bad."
