Keeping busy at summer day camp
Contributed by: Kristin Morin/YourHub.com on 6/9/2008

The first week of Longmont Summer Day Camp ended with a splash as campers took an afternoon field trip to the pool.

"The field trips are the best part [of day camp]," said Reid Killebrew, 8, of Longmont. "We go swimming and to amusement parks."

After getting wet and wild, the kids came back to the St. Vrain Memorial Building, where the camp is based, to get picked up for the day by their parents.

Sports in the gymnasium and a community room filled with blocks, games, toys and art supplies were enough to keep the campers excited even after their swimming excursion.

"I'm drawing mutant whales," Reid said.

"I drew a flower for my refrigerator," Nina Ning, 6, of Longmont said.

Two summer camps are offered through Longmont Recreation, one is the Summer Day Camp for children ages 6 to 12, and the other is a camp for special needs teens ages 13 to 21. The camps are currently operating at capacity. One hundred and fifty kids are enrolled in the summer programs.
