On Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at 7:00 p.m., the Longmont Museum continues its Evening at the Museum summer concert series with the African drumming and dance of the Mensah Brothers with Logo Ligi. Admission is free. The concert takes place in the Museum’s outdoor courtyard. Seating is on the grass, and picnics are welcome.
Master drummer and dancer Maputo Mensah arrived in this area in 1999, and founded Logo Ligi as a way of increasing people’s awareness of the global community. He is a principal member of the Akrowa Cultural Performance ensemble at the Academy of African Music and Arts in Accra, Ghana, and has toured internationally. Logo Ligi, a diverse dance and music ensemble, performs traditional Ghanaian dances and rhythms under Mensah’s direction. With the arrival in 2002 of his brother, acclaimed drummer Mawuenyega Mensah, Logo Ligi now has two master musicians and a devoted core who perform regularly around the Front Range.
African drumming and dance has a powerful impact on anyone experiencing it for the first time. The powerful drum rhythms, enhanced by the ensemble’s vocal harmonics, bring the crowd into the performance immediately. The joy of the dance performance builds the excitement, and soon everyone is on their feet, moving to the beat of the ancient African rhythms.
Mensah Brothers with Logo Ligi are part of the Longmont Museum’s “Evening at the Museum” series, sponsored by the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District and the City of Longmont, with additional support from The Yellow Scene and Boulder Magazine. Peformances will take place rain or shine.
