Movie Review: In Bruges
2008 Action/Comedy
Starring:
Colin Farrell
Brendan Gleeson
Ralph Fiennes
Grade: B

You might be asking 'Where IS Bruges?' Well; it is in Belgium, and the filming of the city is absolutely breathtaking. If you enjoyed nothing else about this film, you would still really appreciate the beautiful views of the ancient buildings and canals.

To see 'In Bruges' on opening night we ended up having to go to Denver, but we got to experience the movie in the historic Esquire theater (located at 6th and Downing) with a very eclectic crowd, so that made it even more entertaining. The middle-aged couple in line behind us (who were also there to see In Bruges) were looking at the movie posters and wondering about 'Cannibal Holocaust' which was playing at the same time. I explained that it is an influential horror film by a well-known Italian director and also Eli Roth's favorite horror movie. They said it was not their genre but they appreciated the information, and then were surprised that we were there to see the same movie as they were. Many of us were also admiring the classic style of the old theater as we went in and found our seats.

The movie was a little slow to start on the action and took quite a while to set up, but the acting was good so it was still entertaining. The majority of the film centers around the characters played by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, and I have to admit; I don't love Colin Farrell but he was very good in this movie and played his part well. On the other hand, I really do like Brendan Gleeson's work and have enjoyed many of his movies - if you don't know his name look him up on IMDb and I guarantee you will have seen him in some of your favorite films. He's a great Irish actor who works in a lot of American films as well as many that are produced in the UK and has been acting on the stage and screen for the better part of twenty years. In this movie he plays a protective and sometimes exasperated father figure to Colin Ferrell's emotional, young rogue; and I felt that they had very good timing together.

But the real reason I went to see 'In Bruges' - Ralph Fiennes, does not come fully into the film until about two-thirds of the way through, even though his presence is felt from the beginning. His character has incredibly strict morals and is ruthless about enforcing them, and it makes you love and hate him at the same time. As always, he has thrown himself into the character and is wholly believable, and the combination of himself, Ferrell, and Gleeson in the action sequences created exciting and very emotional interactions.

All in all I enjoyed the film quite a bit - I graded it as a "B" because it was slow in spots, but great acting and photography made it something I would definitely recommend for fans of dark comedies.
