Behind-the-Scenes Manipulations
Contributed by: Jerilyn Wilson on 4/18/2008

Is LifeBridge Christian Church and/or the 4C Corporation attempting another run at having their Union Development annexed to Longmont? Various events are suggesting that's the case.

*In December, the church or the 4C Corporation withdrew the Union
Developments's annexation request from a special election ballot that was mandated by a successful citizen petition drive.

*In January, five neighboring towns were solicited to annex the development.
Only Firestone showed an interest, and its elected officials later voted in favor
of the annexation. (These officials have since been voted out of office.)

*Upon Firestone's decision for a flagpole annexation of the Union Development,
alarms were rung in Longmont, warning citizens our eastern border was being
threatened. (Our eastern border would have been better defined, and this issue
wouldn't be coming up now, if the church and/or its subsidiaries hadn't pur-
chased the land out from under Longmont's negotions for it several years ago.)

*Recent "robo" calls were made by an unidentified entity to many Longmont citizens in an apparent attempt to incite anger against specific Longmont
council members who in the past questioned the wisdom of Longmont
annexing the Union Development.

*A recent commentary in the local newspaper by Weld County's assessor and
one of its commissioners pointedly urged Longmont to reconsider the annex-
ation of the Union Development.

There is no doubt some behind-the-scenes manipulation is occurring. Is Firestone being "used" to panic Longmont into annexing the Union Development?

Calculations a year ago showed annexing the development was not in Longmont's best financial interests. It still isn't.

Longmont needs to concentrate on doing what it can to protect the Union Reservoir and its wildlife, and it needs to complete its annexation of the land it already own in Weld County. We have to accept the fact that our eastern border will never be like our other borders. That's why most of us are grateful we live in Boulder County.

No, I'm not obsessed, in fact I try to think about the Clintons as little as possible, which is hard considering they're plastered all over the news on a constant basis. And exactly WHAT public money is 4C trying to get for public development? Are they trying to take government grants to build? Not as far as I know...all they are trying to do it is develop their property, and be exempt from taxes in certain circumstances, where they are providing services so that the government doesn't have to, in fact SAVING the tax payers money. But of course you can't see the forest for the trees since you're so "obsessed" with not letting this development happen at all.

Ms. Baum, how do you manage to work President Clinton into every subject? The word "obsession" comes to mind - obsessions are very seldom healthy. I also recommend you read about "The Arkansas Project", a conspiracy to remove Clinton from office which was by any measure "vast" and "right-wing" (and one that failed miserably - Clinton left office more popular than President Reagan).

Jerilyn never used the words "vast" nor "right-wing" nor conspiracy. She actually pointed out some unpleasant truths - a bunch of shadowy businessmen are hiding behind a church to try to get public money for a private development. It stinks, and Longmont is right to block it until more is known. Thanks, Jerilyn.

So you’re basically saying this is all a vast right-wing conspiracy? Kind of like the Monica Lewinsky conspiracy? Oh wait, that wasn’t a right-wing conspiracy, even though Hillary got on national TV and demanded that it was...and this isn’t either. And one other little correction – it was the financials presented by your extremely biased group that said it wasn’t in Longmont’s best interest...the REAL numbers paint a VERY different picture. The picture that the Weld County Assessor presents, that is clearly a financial boon – and this coming from a source whose JOB it is to deal with property valuation and taxation and who has no material stake in what Longmont does (because this property is in Weld county either way so no matter if the property is annexed or not does not affect the county).
