Cut out the childish behavior on Longmont Council
Contributed by: Richard Yale on 7/16/2008

Dear Editor,

The electioneering from last November's campaign down graded the nature and quality of City Council Meetings to Children's school gradelevel at times and this undisciplined behavior under auspicesof responsible City Governanceis splitting the unity of the community apart. To stop it some members, in particular one, need an attitude change to restore civility in their behaviorwhen dealing with members of the public whether they like their politics or not. They are the adults and they need to start acting like it, not like children even if the public is acting like children in their views. To wit:

Council member McCoy's rant Tuesday night, July 16, 2008 highlights why Council is at the table looking at either raising taxes or service fees without increasing benefits or services to the citizens for the money it wants. The people are the economy; they create the money Council spends, it is their money, not Councils. Council's phony claim is the source of all the acrimony these days between Council and conservatives. This control of the economy by the Council Bloc instead of the People whose property the money is, is the root of controversy triggering conservative blogs and web sites. Councilman McCoy is applying old Senator Joe McCarthy's guilt-by-association technique to peg conservatives with the Longmont Report. Although funny, Longmont Report does step over the line at times and its lack of civility sometimes parallels the same lack of civility demonstrated by the anti-free enterprise attacks against the Union Reservoir Project. But does Councilman McCoy condemn those attacks as phony patriotism? No.

This exhibition of anti-Americanism flies in the face of the Councilman's Oath of Office opening the question: Is there no honor or decency left in local politics? The exaggerations and misrepresentations by this public official hurt the economy and promote class warfare. There are good people on Council and we are relying on them to restore decency and honor to restore a better community here at home by demanding an end to outbursts such as this one summarized on YourTube.com: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZCYOHBXmkw.

(Didn't visit this post for a while) During the dust-up, I wrote McCoy privately, of course no reply, and said the same thing (oust). I will give people a chance to make things right, you should know that. If people are stupid enough to elect somebody, then they get stuck with them until next election. $75k is alot of money (I guess not to some people) for a ballot question and recall. I've heard the recall 'calls', and if it isn't $75k I might sign a petition and push it, but I won't start it myself. Of course, as bad as this council continues to be, all bets could be off on the above statement.

Chris, it's sad that with all the paragons of accountability no one's yet stood up and revealed who it is. but there are ways, slow and steady. You're NOT out to oust anyone? I have to confess some skepticism, based on the pounding, but I'll accept your word at face value until I see some proof otherwise. You might consider holding your breath.

Doug, I've been hearing you say that about LR for, what, 6 months now? Not going to hear this endlessly with no actual results, are we? Becomes a little hollow and old eventually. Ref: McCoy, I'd be just in vocal in publicizing 'doing the right thing', as long as it doesn't repeat. Unless he's reloading for Rd2 (or would it be 3 or 4 at this point?), I'm not out to oust or recall anyone. It shouldn't be too much to ask that one act appropriate to their elected position. I rarely hold my breath on things like this.

But don't hold your breath (unless it's for dramatic purposes)

Longmont Report will get sorted out, have no fear. :-> Richard, for once I agree completely, having elected officials involved in attacks is terrible - and they should always apologize. I hope Sean does. It would set a good tone.

I have no association with Longmont Reports! I don’t have the slightest idea who is behind LR. I bitterly resent the posted slanders that maliciously and with malice try to associate me with certain political ideas or web sites that they hold in contempt and ridicule. This is exactly what our Council member tries to do to people and groups he does not agree with. When the member and his supporters can’t compete with American ideals and values they regress to personal attacks and false associations. This is the political thought police at work, not Americanism. The practice, especially by an elected official chills freedom of expression in the exchange of ideas and values for the good of the whole community in Longmont and denies the People Government by Consent turning the form to Government by intimidation.

FYI, Doug Wray himself commented to Longmont Report on its main article: "I have to say, this is hilarious - you've outdone yourself. :-D" Regarding bestiality, I see no reference in the article to having sex with ferrets. Truthfully, I don't know who is behind LR, and I don't think Chris R. or Rich Yale do either.

The other issue is the obvious double standard in play here. Think about the previous council(s) and the whining about what they did or didnt do, or listen or not listen to a certain segment. But we better not question this one, oh no. Or lets say if Santos said 1/5th of the insults McCoy often doles out, aimed at say, Doug - that okay? Or when Simone ripped Kaye or Duane at a Firestone meeting - oh, the outrage! But keep on defending your leader no matter what....I thought Rich asked you not to contact him in any way.

But the bigger issue is even if LR, or any blogger, was guilty of anything you say, there should be a higher expectation out of our elected officials to not act like clods in public. Like that Douglas Bruce guy, and I'm sure you can think of other examples, if these types can't conduct themselves appropriately to the position they've been elected to, then they shouldn't run for office and should resign. It's bad enough when they go back on campaign promises and join the good ol' boy network when they get in to office, but to also be a public embarassment by a lack of control or any class? No citizens should stand for that.

Bestiality? You've got to be kidding, right? A ferret on the face is the same as bestiality? Accusing someone of THAT is perverted, but it doesn't do THAT, and what it did IS funny. I think even Doug admitted that somewhere and has even taken on the "Dooty" name LR came up with. The problem is that McCoy, and some of you, have made the shortsighted leap that we must all be connected to LR. I don't even make those YouTube videos - but I'll sure as heck link to them, solid gold. Commentary is usually not even needed.
