It happened several elections ago. There they were, huge piles of political signs taken from all over the City, (in the weeks BEFORE the election) in the County Yard, removed by employees of our own local government entities. Oh, well, it was just a misunderstanding, they said. They were not in good places, they said. (some of them were on private property) It won't happen again they said.
Well it happened last election (again), and now for this election, in the week just before the election, yet again. Either it is intentional, and all assurances to the contrary, city and county employees are being TOLD to remove them, or they have no control over the folks they hire. Either way, freedom of speech in Boulder City and County suffer.
If I put a sign on my own private property for a candidate I choose to support, that sign had better stay there until the election is OVER. We've had some issues in Boulder County that could easily be construed as a contempt for private property rights, and if there were doubt in anyone's minds, this sort of thing would clinch it. This isn't also a party issue; candidate signs of all types are being taken down (maybe we should take note of whose are NOT touched).
On Friday 11/3, a protest dubbed "it's the last straw" was held at the NE corner of 6th and Canyon in Boulder, to make folks aware that, in the week before the election, staff hired by the City and County are taking signs down, even going way onto private property to do so. Some of these signs were up for months; if candidates had put them in places illegally, they should have been contacted (you always know who the candidate is), THAT would have been responsible. THIS is political.
Maybe something will be done THIS time. It's up to our elected officials to be above this sort of thing. If they can't fix it, maybe they should be replaced.
