I am a former community journalist at YourHub.com who lived in Vail for two years before moving to Cody, Wyo., where I live now. I mostly use YourHub.com to keep in touch with my former colleagues at YourHub.com World Headquarters in Denver, but I also like photography and post a lot of photos. Teva Mountain Games: Boating
Contributed by: Joel Hunt   on 6/2/2007

The Teva Mountain Games kicked off this past week and are really in full swing this weekend. The games include mountain and road cycling (with a multisport hybrid race call the Ultimate Mountain Challenge that attracted the likes of Tour de France champion Floyd Landis), bouldering, kayaking, rafting, trail running and a slew of other sports you have to be a millionaire and a masochist just to get started at.

I've made it a point to get out to a few of the events on my days off and before work, but mostly what I've seen is qualifying because that goes on in the mornings and then the finals and championships happen in the afternoons and evenings. Even so, I've gotten a good taste of the games so far.

Because I've taken quite a few pictures of a couple of different events, I decided to split them up into two blog entries, thus the title.

The first group of photos is kayakers at a public clinic Friday morning at the whitewater park in Vail. Although I don't think these guys and girls were pros, some were pretty good, as evidenced by the photos.

The second group of photos is
of the paddlecross, an event for kayaks and rafts that mimics the head-to-head competition of boardercross and skiercross. The paddlecross events opened the games on Wednesday in Dowd Chute.

For a story on team Teva 8-Ball, which will be representing the U.S. at the World Rafting Championships, see this story by Daily Sports Writer Ian Cropp.

With trick names like space Godzilla and phonyx monkey, you'll have to figure out what they're doing for yourselves.

The highlight of the Teva Games for me was listening to those goofy old ladies next to us talking about their friend who shouldn't wear spandex, and then every once in a while, throw in some great commentary on the rafters and their technique.
