Blog Entry 26 of 50 Alpenglow
I am a former community journalist at YourHub.com who lived in Vail for two years before moving to Cody, Wyo., where I live now. I mostly use YourHub.com to keep in touch with my former colleagues at YourHub.com World Headquarters in Denver, but I also like photography and post a lot of photos. Season two

So my "sabbatical" is over, and hopefully I'll be posting regularly again. It's been a busy couple of months; I got engaged, I've moved to Eagle-Vail, volunteered at the Great American Beer Festival, and more (never-ending) turnover on the copy desk, in addition to being turned down as a volunteer for the Birds of Prey races going on this week and weekend at Beaver Creek.

Ingrid and I got engaged and are getting married in June.

The GABF was really cool. I don't know why someone would pay full price (or scalper prices, for that matter) for a ticket when you can volunteer (all we did was pour beer), get in for free, drink pretty much all the beer you want and get a bunch of free swag.

Ingrid and I ended up pouring for Gritty McDuff's, a brewpub with three locations in Maine: Portland, Freeport and Auburn. Ingrid and I actually ate (and had a few beers) at the Portland location when we were in Maine in July, so that was cool. I also picked up some tasting glasses, a Gritty's long-sleeved shirt, a Deschutes Brewery hat and a bag o' free stuff for volunteering.

I also was turned down as a volunteer for Birds of Prey -- because I'm a snowboarder. I thought those prejudices I wanted to do course maintenance so I could get the World Cup jacket they give to those volunteers, but apparently you have to be a skier. Oh, well. Organizations that rely on volunteers to make events work shouldn't be choosers but whatever.

I have a bunch of days on the mountain already even though Vail's opening was delayed because of lack of snow. I got about four or five early season days the week Loveland opened and then at Copper a little later. Conditions were OK on the groomers. So far, I've just been working on "buttering," riding on just the nose or tail of the board and jumping around. I've been playing a lot of Tony Hawk lately, so I've taken some more influence from skating. I'll try to get some video if I can find someone to film me. I'm going to keep track of my days this year, but don't have a specific number in mind.

I'd also like to try telemarking, but it depends on how good I can get a buttering.

I also was a model for one of our A&E cover stories (see the photos), but I tried to flatten the pdf and change it to a jpeg so I could post it, but I got an error message, so it didn't work. The Vail Daily story that the photo went with is online here but not the layout.

Days so far
Loveland: 3
Copper: 2
Vail: 1
Beaver Creek: 7
Total: 13

Joel!!! Congrats to you and Ingrid! Hope to see photos from the wedding. Did you take advantage of free skiing this month at Crested Butte?

Congrats, Joel! Hey is there a woman named Geraldine that works up there with you? She was a friend of mine from college and I'm pretty sure she was employed there at some time.

As I told Ingrid, congrats on the engagement. Also, how appropriate that you'd be pouring (Mc)Duff('s) Beer. Sounds like you guys might be in for a big dump this weekend.
