Gapril Fools at the Beav

Just as I was leaving Elk Lot (the free lot) to take the bus up to Beaver Creek on April Fools, I heard someone driving by yelling my name. Turns out it was my friends Pat, Greg and Lindsey. They were getting ready to hit the hill after going to Edwards to a thrift store to pick up some gaper outfits for "Gapril Fools."

How do you know if you're a gaper? You might be a gaper if:
-You wear jeans on the slopes and tuck them into your ski boots.
-You have a fluorescent one-piece and your skis touch each other.
-Your wear your gloves over your coat cuffs.
-You swing your skis around, oblivious to anyone around you.
-You yell "Yee haw!" after catching 2 inches of air (usually by hopping, not by actually getting airborne).
-There's a gap between your goggles and your hat.
-You have goggles- or sunglasses-shaped tan lines.

There are a couple of theories I've heard about the origin of the term. According to one, gaper comes from the gap some people have between their hat and goggles. The other says that they like to gape and stare at the good skiers and riders. I tend to believe the former, and that's most common explanation I hear.

So I rode with them, although I hadn't heard about Gapril Fools until then so I had no costume, but I'm getting some crazy outfit for the last day of the season.
