HubCap: Carrie Bradshaw, where art thou?
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 6/9/2006

When I was a sophomore in high school, my girlfriend at the time called a radio station in Rochester, Minn., (the closest outpost of civilization to my hometown) and wailed to the DJ about some of the shortcomings of our relationship. Actually, she just complained about me, which, after all this time, I must admit was totally warranted. The DJ agreed, and I think he called me a creep or something like that and suggested she break up with me.

I'm not really sure how many people in my high school heard her on the radio that night, but my friend Robb, who is still alive and well and currently living in Arvada, actually taped their conversation via a cassette tape (a piece of technology some of you may remember), so I got to listen to it on the school library's cassette player the next morning.

Thanks to that radio station DJ's advice, Kelly and I broke up, and I moved on to do other things, such as get my driver's license and take someone else to the prom two years later. I eventually found another woman who was able to tolerate me and I believe Kelly married a nice young man a couple years ago.

The good thing about having your dysfunctional love life broadcast to literally dozens of listeners in southern Minnesota and northeast Iowa, or to another similar broader audience? Someone out there is probably having the same problem, or wrestling with the same dilemma, and actually might benefit.

We used to have a great love columnist at YourHub.com: Eve Donegan. Eve was a DU student who posted relationship advice columns on the Denver South site every couple of weeks, starting with this one, "What Women Want." I thought Eve was great because I always figured she was talking about her own relationship questions when she wrote.

Sometimes, she did talk about her own relationship, like in "Love, when it's not convenient," in which she lamented the fact that she met her boyfriend so early in life, when she should have been exploring other relationship and experiencing the single life. Call me a pessimist, but it sounded to me like she was going to dump him pretty quickly. Notice that the photo accompanying the column appears to have someone cut out of it? Hmmm...

Well, Eve's moved home for summer break, and instead of returning to DU in the fall, she's going to be in Ireland, so she's resigned her post as YourHub.com's love columnist. We need someone to step up and replace her. I'm obviously not qualified, as proven by a DJ in 1995, but I know someone else out there is. You don't have to be a certified counselor or anything -- Eve was a college student and we don't even know what her major is.

If you'd like to be the Carrie Bradshaw of the Denver metro area, click here and start writing. I'll even give you your first topic: "All men suck because ..."

Ordinarily I would be all over this. But "love columnist" just doesn't sound right and wouldn't fit my macho - he who sucks - persona. What about "domestic issues consultant?"

I'd love to be the Carrie, but I think my rack is to big.

Great column, Brendan. Ah...teenage love. It seems so serious at the time and such a fun and nostalgic memory later. I hope Kelly found what she was looking for. They (whoever "they" are) say that you can't stop getting older but you can always remain immature. Keep up the good work!
