If you're looking for something fun to do this weekend, stop by and view the Tactile and Art Challenge Show at the Louisville Center for the Arts. Sponsored by the Louisville Art Association, the shows feature touchable art and art by people with disabilities.
Louisville resident and artist, Jane Whittlesey says, "This is my favorite show - very touchy-feely. It's truly a hands-on experience and I know no one is going to say to my children, 'Don't Touch!'"
Over one hundred pieces of art will be displayed and awards totaling over $1000 will be presented at the opening reception on Saturday, May 23.
Co-chairpersons of the show, Lynn Wooton and Leslie Maya-Charles say this is a unique kind of show. "This show allows every kind of artist to participate, with many different mediums from unformed clay and structured metals to watercolors and textured oil paintings," says Wooton.
And Maya-Charles agrees. "This art show is an opportunity for artists who play outside the traditional paint box to demonstrate to the community what they can accomplish," she says. "There are people making incredible art that may not fit into the fine art world." She says that some artists do manage to continue to create after life changing events like a stroke or closed head injury. "People with disabilities have huge talent and ability and this show gives them a place to show their talent and compete."
The 17 th Annual Tactile and Art Challenge show invites the community to attend it's opening reception on Saturday, May 23, between 7 and 9 pm at the Louisville Center for the Arts, 801 Grant Avenue (near Memory Square Park).
