16 th National Juried Photography Show Opens June 30 at Louisville Art Center

"Art is in the artist, not in the medium."

Hal Gould has looked at thousands of photographs in his day. The founder of the Colorado Photographic Art Center in 1963, and the Camera Obscura Gallery in Denver in 1979, Gould has viewed photography as fine art for decades.

As the juror for the Louisville Art Association's (LAA) National Photography Show, which opens on June 30, the 87-year old Gould says it's not easy choosing which photographs to include in a show. "I've been around a while," he says. "and you just learn to recognize the art the photograph represents instinctively." In order to choose the photographs for a show, "you just look for those pieces that have good technique but also display the artist's own crazy vision," he says.

Over 800 photographs were submitted to the LAA Photography Show, many more than in previous years, and about 100 were chosen. Gould said the submissions were "stunning."

"We're seeing a new phase of fine art photography," he says. According to Gould, fine art photography galleries have sprung up all over the country. "Now, we've seen fine art photography sold for a million dollars and recently, the record was $3 million dollars," he added.

The Louisville Art Association's 16 th National Juried Photography Show includes entries that span the country from Maine to Hawaii, but also includes a good number of submissions from Colorado. Co-chairperson of the show, Evelyn Taylor, says that while there are a number of categories in the show, including black and white, color, digital, etc., "this is the first year we've had a theme category. The theme this year is 'hands' and it's fascinating to see how different photographers approached this subject."

The opening reception for the show will be Saturday, June 30, from 7-9 p.m. at the Louisville Center for the Arts, 801 Grant Avenue, Louisville, Colorado. The opening reception is open to the public. The show will run until July 8. Hours and additional information can be found on the LAA web site at www.louisvilleart.org

The Louisville Art Association is funded in part by a grant from the Boulder County Scientific and Cultural Facilities (SCFD) and in-kind funding by the City of Louisville.
