Madeline Bondy
won the best school mystery story at Superior Elementary School. Madeline is in the 4th grade and enjoys writing short stories and is writing a sequel to the attached story. Watch for chapter two to be coming along shortly.
Mystery in the Forest
The cool wind blew on Raye's face as she sprinted through the forest after Maya, a rather daring, beige cocker spaniel from the pet store. The air smelled sweetly of rain, as a storm had very recently passed through. For Raye that was good, because Maya's tracks were fresh in the mud, due to the rainstorm turning the dirt floor to mud.
As she dashed through the forest after Maya, she wondered why the dog had run to the forest today. All the other days Maya had run away, she had run to the cat store. Little did Raye know, Maya running into the forest was only the beginning of a mystery. And her other mysteries would be far more confusing and much more dangerous than this one.
Ten minutes later, Raye came back to the dog store holding a struggling Maya. Sara, the dog store owner, stepped out of the shop.
"What took so long, Raye?"
"Sorry, Sara. Maya ran into the forest, not to the cat store, as usual."
"Well, maybe next time, you should give her that other dog food." Sara suggested.
"Okay. I will." Raye agreed. But Raye knew that it wasn't the dog food.
Her instincts told her when something weird was going on. And right now, something weird was going on. Raye wanted to know what it was. The full moon shone brightly in the night sky. Raye crept silently through the peaceful, moon-illuminated streets. She soon found the dog store. Taking out the key Sara had trusted her with, Raye slipped it into the keyhole and turned it until she heard a click. With a careful push, Raye opened the door. Amazingly, Maya was still awake. Raye opened her cage door and lifted her up and out.
"Okay, girl. You're free!" Raye whispered. Maya dashed out. Raye shut the door and scurried after Maya into the dark forest that lay ahead. Though she couldn't see her, Raye could definitely hear Maya. With all the leaves and twigs crunching and crackling under Maya's feet, she was hard to miss. Soon, Raye entered a part of the forest she had never been to before.
She hoped Maya would stop soon, for she was beginning to get scared. Granting her wish, Maya did stop. What she stopped at was amazing. "Who she stops, who she saves, what she makes, what she destroys, will all depend on when the worlds collide." Raye read aloud from the gold plaque before her. She tried to guess what it meant, but eventually confused herself. She sat down. Maya strolled over to her.
"What do you think it means, Maya?" She asked the freckled, beige cocker spaniel. Maya looked at her as if to say "I'm a dog, Raye. Get real." Raye laughed, then stared blankly at her feet. "I wish I could, Maya. I'm just stuck in my own world." She then fell asleep. Raye awoke with a drenched face. That was no mystery, however. Maya loved her. As soon as Raye sat up, Maya took off again. "What's wrong with that dog?" Raye muttered, then took off after her.
The forest had a reddish glow to it, for the sunlight was reflecting off the fall leaves. The glow was calming, which allowed Maya and Raye to go much farther. But they were tired all the same, for Maya and Raye had been traveling for a night and a day. Needless to say, Raye was relieved when they came to a small cabin in the woods.
The door looked like it would fall over with even the slightest touch, so Raye decided not to knock. "Hello? Anybody home?" Raye called in. Maya stared at her like she was crazy. Raye waited for a while until finally, the door opened. Raye and Maya carefully stepped inside.
A young woman appeared out of the shadows, staring at the ground. When she looked up, she said: "You came here to discover the meaning of the plaque." Raye responded to her, " Um, no, I came to find a place to rest." The woman smiled slyly, then walked away. Raye stood there for a moment, then called: "Well, can you tell me what it means?" Without turning around the woman said "Yes."
The woman made a gesture indicating they follow her. She and Maya ran to catch up. The woman said: "By the way, my name is Elena." Raye introduced herself as well. "I'm Raye." Elena smiled. "Nice to meet you, Raye." They continued walking through the cabin until they got to a small room. Elena sat down.
"Sometime this year, a legendary event will happen. It happens every 5,000 years."
"What is the event? Telling me something is going to happen isn't very useful, Elena."
"The event is..." Elena never finished the sentence. For as she began to explain the event, a blinding blue light appeared and Elena vanished. All that was left was a piece of old parchment with a mysterious address scrawled upon it.
"Okay. We were just about to solve the mystery, and she vanishes. How fortunate." Raye said, annoyed. Maya stared at her. "Ever heard of sarcasm? Oh, right. You're a dog." Maya nodded in agreement. She was actually an unbelievably smart dog. Raye read the address - 8567 Forest Center. Raye had not known there was a town in the middle of the forest. They started their search.
"Well, here's Forest Center. Not much of a town." Raye observed, looking around the old, broken down houses. Maya ran to an old mansion ahead. Raye followed and knocked on the door. It slowly creaked open. She stepped in. Maya looked at her uncertainly. Suddenly, a voice echoed around the house.
"My mansion is not welcome to visitors. Why do you come?"
"We have a question." Raye's voice shook with fear.
"We? I only see a girl and a dog. Which one are you?"
"I'm a talking dog. Of course I'm the human! What a dumb question!"
There was only silence. Maya looked scared. Raye gulped. "Do you think it was offended?" Raye said softly. A bright green light surrounded the room. Raye stumbled back. In front of them stood a bizarre creature. The upper body was human, while the lower half was a tiger. It stepped forward and spoke: "So human, what is your question?"
Raye stated firmly: "We found a gold plaque, and..."
"You want to know what it means." The creature finished Raye sentence.
"Yeah." said Raye. The creature stood for a moment, deep in thought.
Eventually, it said: "Go home. The answer will be there." Raye sat down angrily. "Fine!"
Oddly, the trip home only took an hour or two. When Maya and Raye returned home, they were panting and exhausted. Sara was waiting. "Plaque. Answer. Need!" Raye could barely get the words out.
Sara started laughing. "I can't believe you fell for that!" She said.
"What do you mean?" Raye asked crossly. All the sudden, she got all her strength back.
"I put that plaque there to see if your instinct thing worked." Sara told her.
"That's mean." Raye sounded hurt. "Sorry." replied Sara.
"There's something I don't get, Sara. How did you create Elena and the half human, half tiger creature?" asked Raye.
"What are you talking about?" said Sara.
Suddenly, Maya began barking at the dark sky. Raye and Sara gazed above. In the sky, two spheres, one green and one blue, collided in a blast of colorful light.
"The event...." Raye whispered.
