I moved back to Colorado fifteen years ago and I have lived in Montbello for ten years. I was one of the first group of children to attend Oakland Elementary (when it was a warehouse). When I was growing up in Montbello, it was a great place. When my family moved away, I vowed to return and work in my community. When I returned fifteen years ago, I kept hearing this negative term "montghetto". What's that about? Now that I have been living in Montbello, I still hear and see the stigma. I see how other close by communities are improving, Stapleton, Lowry, Northfield and Green Valley Ranch; but I have not seen any improvements that will entice families to move here. Also, I have heard people say "I moved to Green Valley Ranch because I do not want to be labeled as living in such a bad community". Or, some have given me the impression that they are better than us.I get funny looks when I tell people where I live. Well, I live here because I believe I could be of assistance to help Montbello have a positive image. I can't do it alone, this is our community and we all need to be involved at some level. Even if it's making sure your front lawn is nicely manicured or no litter on the side walk.
So, I would like to get feedback from other Montbelloans. How do you see it? What have you personally experienced? How do you like the schools, teachers? Is there enough for the children and youth to do during the summer months and school year? I just want to hear from others who live or lived in Montbello. And, if you do not live here anymore, why did you leave? I know this is a loaded entry, but I have been looking for a platform where this could be addressed. I hope I have peaked your interests and we can start a dialogue.
