After I walked out of the theatre from
28 Weeks Later
, my mom, who's been in the nursing profession for more than 30 years, talked about how a horrible man-made disease could easily escape into the populace and decimate the planet.
That impending sense of doom permiates the entire movie, which is a sequel to 2002's
28 Days Later
, in which the vast population of Great Britain is turned into mindless raging cannibals - zombies.
28 Days Later
revolutionized zombies through a very simple change. Instead of slouching corpses that methodically reaches their prey, these zombies ran, adding an intense level of action to the movie.
There's no revolution in the sequel, but there doesn't need to be. Director
Juan
Carlos Fresnadillo
, who also helped write the screenplay, makes sure there's no mistaking this as a sequel. The music and film style could have come straight from the first movie. Not suprisingly,
Danny Boyle
, director of the first movie, is executive director for the sequel.
This movie takes place roughly six months after the last movie ended. Those Britons who have survived are on a secluded section of Britain and are under the protection of the U.S. military. The virus, which is dubbed the 'rage virus' in the sequel, has seemingly died out.
But everyone knows the disease coming back. And the consequences of the actions in this movie - ironically due mostly to self-preservation - just keep getting worse and worse, leading to a feeling of impending doom that never stops.
Where
28 Weeks Later
surpasses its predecessor is in that consistency. 28 Days Later took a strange turn late in the movie, where the antagonists changed from the zombies into the a ragtag group of British military personnel.
28 Weeks Later
follows a more uniform storyline, leaving watchers with a more enjoyable experience - if you like massive gore and extreme violence, hilighted by an almost surreal helicopter versus zombies collision.
3.5 out of 4 stars

I ended up walking out during the first one, so I'll probably pass here. Loved "Grindhouse" though.
